The New York University men's fencing team will have two members
competing at the NCAA National Championships hosted by Ohio State
University. The action takes place at the French Fieldhouse in
Columbus, OH, with the two Violet fencers competing on Saturday and
Sunday, March 22-23.
Sophomore Andrew Kelly and senior Christian Vastola earned their spots with impressive finishes at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships on Sunday, March 9, at Wellesley College in Wellesley, MA.
Kelly was the top Violet finisher. He placed ninth in sabre, improving upon his 13th place finish in 2013. Kelly will look to better his freshman performance at the 2013 National Championships, when he finished 17th.
The initial sabre round robin competition will take place on Sunday beginning at 9:00 am.
Vastola was the scond best Violet at regionals, finishing 13th in foil. The senior led the team in wins this season with 43, highlighted by a 17-1 performance at the Eric Sollee Invitational on February 1 in Waltham, MA. This will be Vastola's first appearance at the NCAA National Championships.
The initial foil round robin competition will take place on Saturday beginning at 9:30 am.
"They had terrific performances at Regionals which capped an excellent season against top NCAA Division I competition," said NYU Head Coach Steve Mormando.
Advancement to the NCAA Championships is based on season statistics, as well as regional championship results.
