From NYU Athletics
Todd Kolean, who has served as Assistant Diving Coach at New York University for the past seven seasons, has been promoted to Head Coach entering the 2016-17 season. Kolean formerly served as Head Coach of the men's and women's diving teams from 1990-2000.
"I am thrilled to have Todd Kolean returning to the full-time position of NYU Diving Head Coach," said Christopher Bledsoe, NYU's Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Director of Athletics. "Todd is a coach who knows NYU and its students so well. He is also a former National Diving Coach of the Year whose divers have won three national championships. I look forward to what Coach Kolean and our NYU divers, present and future, will accomplish together."
During Kolean's first tenure as Head Coach at NYU, four of his divers earned NCAA All-America honors. He also produced 10 University Athletic Association (UAA) champions and received UAA Coaching Staff of the Year honors in 1997.
Following his first stint at NYU, Kolean served as Head Coach at Hamilton College where he produced three national champions. He earned NCAA Diving Coach of the Year honors in 2006 and from the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) twice (2005, 2006). Kolean then moved on to the Head Coach position at Old Dominion University, where three of his divers earned All-Colonial Athletic Association honors.
Since returning to the Violets' coaching staff as an assistant, Kolean has continued to help the program flourish. In 2014-15, two NYU divers qualified for the NCAA Championships as Austen Blease earned Honorable Mention All-America.
"I feel like it's come full circle," said Kolean. "I was here for 10 years before I handed the program to Scott Donie, who did a wonderful job. When I came back as the golf coach, I was fortunate to also be part of the diving program. I'm very happy to take over the head coaching position. We have a great team returning with quality recruits coming in, and I look forward to continuing the proud tradition of NYU diving and hopefully turn the team into a national power."
Kolean served seven seasons as Head Coach of NYU's men's and women's golf teams. Last year, he led the women to their first-ever UAA Championship, third Liberty League Championship and second consecutive NCAA Championship appearance while guiding the men to seven top-five finishes. A two-time UAA and three-time Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year honoree, Kolean led the women's squad to a program-best 10th-place finish at the 2015 NCAA Championship.
A 1988 graduate of the University of North Dakota with Bachelor of Arts degrees in history and political science, Kolean is a native of Holland, MI, and resides in Jersey City, NJ.
