Eleni Wechsler scattered 10 hits over seven innings to get a complete-game 5-3 victory over second-ranked Washington University at the University Athletic Association championships. It was Rochester's second win over the Bears in the last three days. On Wednesday, Rochester defeated Washington, 4-2, for its first UAA win. Wechsler picked up the save in that one.
In Saturday's earlier game, Rochester lost to Case Western Reserve, 4-0. With the split, the Yellowjackets are 4-9 overall, 2-7 in the UAA. They finish the UAA championships against NYU on Sunday morning.
Wechsler walked three and hit one. She allowed three runs, two of them were earned. She helped her own cause, going 3-4 with one RBI and one run scopred. Harfleigh Kaczegowicz was 2-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Rachael Pletz was 1-3 with two RBIs and she scored one run. Gianna Melillo knocked in one run. Shelby Corning and Laurelle Byrne-Cody scored runs. Jocelyn Blackshear and Byrne-Cody had base hits.
The Yellowjackets jumped on Washington starter Maggie Clapp for three runs in the first. Wechsler doubled and Kaczegowicz reached on an infield single. An error by the shortstop moved Wechsler to third. Kaczegowicz stole second and both runners scored when Pletz singled up the middle. She took second on a throwing error. Lauren Muni singled, putting runners at the corners. Melillo forced Muni at second, bringing home Pletz with the third run. Another single chased Clapp, but the Bears got out of it without further damage.
Washington pulled a run back in the third on Anna McKee's RBI single. Rochester made it 4-1 in the fourth. Byrne-Cody singled and two outs later, stole second. Kazczegowicz doubled for the RBI.
A single, a passed ball, a groundout, and another single put Washington back within two, 4-2, in the fifth. Rochester got it back in the sixth. Corning reached on an error, moved to second on a sac bunt, and scored on Wechsler's single.
That run was important because the Bears staged an uprising in their half of the seventh. A double and a walk put two aboard. A failed sac left runners at first and second. Brooke Hofer singled one home. Another single loaded the bases with one out. Halle Steinberg lined into a game-ending double play to Melillo at third base.
Against Case, Rochester committed three errors – one led to a three-run fourth as CWRU took a 3-0 lead with all three runs being unearned. Rochester stranded seven runners. Wechsler, Byrne-Cody, and Corning had two hits apiece. Sam Malecki took the loss. In 3.1 innings, she allowed three hits, three runs (all unearned), and walked four. Wechsler pitched the final 3.2 innings, giving up one earned run, two hits, and one wild pitch.
