The Case Western Reserve University softball team picked up a pair of wins on Wednesday in Kissimmee, Florida, coming from behind to defeat Mount Saint Mary College 3-2 in the first game of the day, before the offense erupted in a 7-1 win over Lesley University in the late contest.

The Spartans improved to 4-4 this season with the two wins, while the Knights dropped to 1-4 overall and the Lynx fell to 1-5 on the season.

Game 1: CWRU 3, Mt. St. Mary 2
Case Western Reserve junior centerfielder Katie Wede led the Spartans at the plate with a two-for-four performance in which she drove in all three runs, including the walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh.

The Knights got on the board first with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first, giving Mount Saint Mary a 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 until the fifth when the Knights scored an unearned run to increase their lead to 2-0.

The Spartans evened the score in the bottom half of the fifth when Wede singled to drive in two runs, junior Maren Waldner and senior Annie Wennerberg.

The game stayed even at 2-2 until the bottom of the seventh. Waldner opened the inning with a double, followed by Wennerberg reaching base on a fielder's choice that advanced Waldner to third. CWRU's next two hitters struck before Wede stepped to the plate and delivered the game-winning single that drove in Waldner from third.

Waldner finished the first game three-for-three at the plate with two runs scored.

Wennerberg struck out five and allowed zero walks during her seven innings, earning the win to improve to 3-2 on the year.

Cindy Connoly was credited with the loss for the Knights, falling to 1-2 on the year.

Game 2: CWRU 7, Lesley 1
Case Western Reserve collected 13 hits, en route to a 7-1 win over Lesley in the late game on Wednesday.

The Spartans were able to cash in a run in the top of the first inning when a ground out by junior Grace Tritchler scored Wede for the first run of the game. Waldner followed with an RBI single that scored freshman Emily Nishiwaki to put the Spartans up 2-0. CWRU added two more runs in the top of the third when freshman Nicole Carty hit her first collegiate home run, a two-run shot, which extended the Spartans lead to 4-0.

The Spartans scored the remainder of their runs in the fifth, when Wennerberg doubled to score Waldner and Carty. Freshman Callie Wang followed by reaching base on an error, which advanced Wennerberg to third. Wang then stole second and Wennerberg scored on a throwing error by the catcher.

Meanwhile, Carty kept the Lynx without a run until the bottom of the fifth inning. She left the game after five innings, allowing just four hits and two walks, while striking out three batters.

Junior Katie Dzierwa and freshman Anna Goff each pitched one inning in relief, allowing a combined two hits.

Waldner finished the second game three-for-four at the plate with one run scored and a RBI, while Carty also went three-for-four with one home run, two runs batted in and two runs scored.

Carty earned the win in the game, improving to 1-0 on the season, while Lesley starter Alyson Nisbet took the loss, falling to 0-3.
