From Case Western Reserve University Athletics
The Case Western Reserve University softball team picked up two more wins on Monday at the Tucson Invitational in Tucson, Arizona to remain perfect on the 2018 campaign, as the Spartans topped the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse 6-5 in extra innings in the first game of the day, and then earning a 7-0 win over the Rochester Institute of Technology in the late contest.
The Spartans improved to a perfect 6-0 this season with the two wins, while the Eagles dropped to 0-5 overall and the Tigers fell to 1-5 on the season.
Game 1: CWRU 6, UWL 5 (8 innnings)
Case Western Reserve freshman outfielder Sarah Miller led the Spartans at the plate with a two-for-four performance, including the walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth.
The Spartans got on the board first when junior Nicole Doyle scored via an error by the Eagles in the bottom of the first. Senior Maren Waldner then drilled an RBI to left field to score senior Katie Wede. Freshman Arisa Cleaveland capped off the scoring in the first for CWRU after she reached first on error that scored Wadlner.
CWRU added one more run in the second after Doyle singled to right center to score freshman Dusstyn Reynolds. The score remained 4-0 until the sixth when the Eagles scored two runs to cut the Spartan lead to 4-2. UWL evened the game in the seventh with two more runs and then took the lead for the first time in the game after an RBI double from Sarah Mueller.
The Spartans came out firing in the bottom of eighth as sophomore Nicole Carty drove in senior Grace Tritchler to even the game at 5-5. After a walk from freshman Sydney Wagner to advance Carty to second, Miller stepped up and delivered the game-winning RBI single to score Carty from second.
Doyle and Waldner each finished the game with one hit and one run batted in.
Sophomore Ilissa Hamilton started for the Spartans and went six innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits, while striking out two batters. Senior Katie Dzierwa appeared in relief to pitch the final two innings, allowing only one earned run on four hits, earning her first win of the 2018 season.
Game 2: CWRU 7, RIT 0
Case Western Reserve collected 10 hits, en route to a 7-0 win over RIT in the late game on Monday.
The Spartans were able to cash in on four runs in the bottom of the first inning after an RBI double from Carty, an error by the Tigers catcher that allowed Tritchler to score from third, and then a two-run RBI single from Reynolds to score Carty and Cleaveland.
CWRU added two more runs in the fifth when freshman Sydney Wagner drilled a two-run RBI single to right center field to score Carty and Reynolds. The Spartans capped off their scoring in the sixth after an RBI single from Tritchler to secure the 7-0 victory.
Freshman Sidney Brannam did not allow a run in her six innings pitched on the day, allowing just two hits and one walk, while striking out one batter. Sophomore Anna Goff pitched one inning in relief, retiring the side in order.
Tritchler finished the second game three-for-four at the plate with one run scored and a RBI, while Reynolds and Wagner each drove in two runs.
Brannam earned the win in the game, improving to 3-0 on the season, while Lauren Mahar took the loss, falling to 1-2.
