Senior Anna McKee tossed a three-hit complete-game shutout to lead the Washington University in St. Louis softball team to a 3-0 win at Brandeis University Friday in Waltham, Mass.
WashU led 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning of game two before the game was suspended due to rain. It will be resumed Saturday at 1 p.m. (ET), followed by game three Saturday at 3 p.m. The final game of the series will be played Sunday at a time to be determined.
WashU improved to 10-13 and 2-7 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) with the win, while Brandeis dropped to 11-18 and 2-11 in the UAA.
McKee (6-6) threw 98 pitches (61 strikes), struck out five and did not allow an extra-base hit in the victory.The complete game for McKee was the 24thof her career, while the shutout was her seventh.
The Bears scored two runs on two hits in the opening inning, and took advantage of a key error by Brandeis. Junior Taylor Arends scored the first run on a throwing error, and then McKee singled to right to drive in senior Maggie Clapp.
WashU added a run in the fifth with some small ball. Freshman Julia Flores led off with a single, and was pinch ran by sophomore Hannah McCall. A passed ball moved McCall to second, and then she came around to score after senior Ashley Madsen reached on a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error by the third baseman.
Arends went 3-for-3 with a double as WashU was limited to just five hits.
