The University of Chicago women's basketball team defeated Brandeis University, 81-56, en route to clinching at least a share of the University Athletic Association championship Sunday.
Sophomore Mia Farrell led the Maroons (20-2, 11-0) – who have won 18 straight games – with 15 points and junior Olariche Obi added 11 points and eight rebounds to help the visitors secure the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament with three league games remaining.
Four players – to highlight UChicago's balanced effort – scored nine point each, as Miranda Burt, Jamie Kockenmeister, Taylor Lake and reserve Marissa Igunbor all chipped into the scoring effort, with senior Elizabeth Nye added seven points and three assists.
The Maroons never trailed in the contest, leading 24-12 after one quarter and 54-26 at halftime. UChicago's largest lead came at the 6:14 mark of the third quarter, as the Maroons led by 36, 68-32, after a Kockenmeister triple.
Brandeis (12-9, 4-7) did outscore the Maroons in the fourth, 17-9, but it didn't matter in end en route to UChicago's 18th-straight win.
The Maroons outshot the Judges, making 48.4 percent (30-of-62) compared to 31.5 percent (17-of-54) and made four more 3-pointers, draining 8-of-22 (36.4 percent) compared to 4-of-13 (30.8. percent).
UChicago dominated in the paint, 36-22, and scored seven more points off the Judges' 20 turnovers, 19-12.
First-year Meaghan O'Hara added six points and four boards off the bench for UChicago and Brandeis reserve Katherine Puda led in scoring for the Judges with 11 points.
