The 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team played at unbeaten and second-ranked Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday, October 15 and shut out the Bears, 1-0, to snap a 30-game home unbeaten streak for last year's national champions. The Tartans move to 9-2-2 for the year and 2-1-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Bears drop to 12-1-1 and 3-1.
The Tartans, who dominated possession for the game, got forward early and took their first shot of the game with three minutes and 15 seconds ticked off the clock. The shot came off the foot of senior Morgan Kontor (Annapolis, Md. / Severn School) and was blocked by a Bear defender.
In the 14th minute, senior Haili Adams (Kirkland, Wash. / Juanita) put in the only goal of the game after taking two touches forward and passing a shot to the far netting past Emma Greenfield in goal for the Bears. Junior Emily Tolmer (Bridgeville, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) played the ball forward through Washington's back line to Adams who is the team's leading goal scorer with nine for the season.
The Tartans' second shot on goal came in the 18th minute when junior Tessa Allen (Manhattan Beach, Calif. / Bishop Montgomery) had a header saved by Greenfield. Freshman Ashley Akin (Minnetonka, Minn. / Hopkins) forced Greenfield into another save in the 30th minute.
Freshman Carolyn Botz (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS) made two routine saves in net for the Tartans in the beginning stages of the second half and in the 62nd minute.
In the 81st minute, sophomore Camille Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio / The Seven Hills School) put a service into the box that bounced and hit the crossbar before Akin's header on the rebound was just over the bar.
The win for the Tartans against the Bears was the first since 2005 and also snapped a 27-game unbeaten streak for the home team.
