No. 22 WashU Opens Season With Double-Digit Win Over No. 11 Swarthmore
The No. 22 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball season opened the season with a 76-56 win over No. 11 Swarthmore in inaugural Scholars Classic, hosted by NYU.
Juniors Hayden Doyle and Drake Kindsvater combined for 43 points as Doyle scored 23 points, pulled down nine boards and dished out five assists and Kindsvater scored 20 points to go with five rebounds.
Swarthmore took a quick 4-0 lead in the opening minutes but the Bears scored five-straight to take a small lead behind a layup from Kindsvater and a 3-pointer from Doyle.
Swarthmore took a two-point, 11-9 lead but the Bears went on a 10-0 run. Will Grudzinski, Kindsvater and Doyle each netted a layup and Doyle hit a pair of free throws. First-year Jake Davis scored his first collegiate points with a layup to make it 19-11 for a Bears' lead.
WashU took a double-digit lead as Davis hit a layup, was fouled and made the ensuing free throw to make it 24-14 with 11:19 on the clock.
A 3-pointer and a layup from Swarthmore's Cal Hanson cut WashU's lead to 26-23 with 9:23 remaining in the first. The Bears maintained a multi-point lead for the next several minutes and a layup from Doyle at the 2:35 mark gave WashU a 36-25 edge.
Back-to-back layups from Swarthmore's Michael Caprise cut WashU's lead to seven points, but the Bears scored the final four points of the half on a pair of free throws from Kindsvater and a jumper from Doyle with one second remaining. WashU went into halftime with a 40-29 lead.
Sophomore Yogi Oliff hit a 3-pointer to open the second half and give the Bears a 14-point, 43-29 lead.
WashU continued to build on its double-digit lead in the first several minutes of the half. Calvin Kapral hit a layup and Kindsvater converted a pair of free throws to make it 47-33 with 18:04 on the clock.
Swarthmore cut it down to five points at the 14:05 mark on a 3-pointer from Eddie Paquette, but the Bears followed with a 16-0 run including five points from Kindsvater and four points from Doyle for a 69-48 Bears' lead with 8:41 remaining.
Another layup from Doyle extended WashU's lead to 71-50 with 7:44 on the clock and a layup from Kindsvater with 4:04 remaining gave the Bears their biggest lead of the game, 76-54.
WashU went 31-for-54 and outrebounded Swarthmore 36-27.
