No. 22 University of Chicago women's basketball has had a relatively easy time dispatching their first four opponents of the season but it's what a team does when faced with adversity that really counts. The Maroons fought back from a first quarter deficit and battle Carroll into overtime before fully taking control of the game in a six-point extra frame win to stay perfect on the year.

FINAL SCORE – IN OVERTIME
No. 22 UChicago – 74
Carroll – 68

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • No. 22 University of Chicago (5-0) was put in unfamiliar territory after the first ten minutes at Carroll (3-2) tonight and trailed by seven after the Pioneers went 11-for-18 from the field to open up the contest.
  • The Maroons defense took over in the next two quarters though, limiting the home team to just 23.1 and 12.5 shooting percentages respectively. Meanwhile, the offense found their rhythm and outscored Carroll 32-21 in that 20-minute span, capped off by a 12-0 run in the second frame, to enter the fourth quarter up by four.
  • However, the Pioneers still had some fight left in them. A 7-0 run to close the final period allowed them to tie the game and send the contest into overtime. UChicago never trailed in the extra stanza though. A three pointer from Kendall Braaten kickstarted the action for the Maroons as they scored eight of the first nine points and would go on to lock down a 74-68 overtime win.
CHICAGO COMMENTS
  • "This was a gutsy and gritty road win for our squad. We had to continue to adjust and adapt as Carroll kept coming at us. We had huge contributions from so many tonight as we pulled together an entire team effort for this big win. I'm very proud of the heart we showed." – Head coach Maria Williamson
  • "This was a great road win to close out our first stretch of games this season. We had lots of people ready to step up and make big plays when necessary. I'm proud of the way our team was relentless through the final buzzer, which is the attitude we need to maintain throughout the rest of the season." – Senior guard Marissa Powe
