Rochester Wraps Up RIT Invitational with Sweeps of Oswego, St. John Fisher

University of Rochester women's volleyball made it eight wins in a row with a pair of sweeps of Oswego State and St. John Fisher to wrap up an undefeated performance at the RIT Invitational on Saturday at Clark Memorial Gymnasium.

With the two wins, UR moves to 8-1 on the season, while Oswego State drops to 1-7 and St. John Fisher moves to 2-6 on the year.

MATCH ONE: Rochester 3, Oswego State 0
The Yellowjackets quickly took control of the opening set against the Lakers, scoring the first seven points of the first set on Ruby Moore's serve and leading by as many as 11 in the early going.

McKenzie McDonald's service ace made it 11-1, before the Lakers slowly made their way back, pulling within six, 15-9, on Cara Simplicio's service ace.

However, Moore and Sonia McGaffigan answered with back-to-back kills, and the Yellowjackets pulled back ahead by 11 with a 5-0 run to force Oswego State to use another timeout.

And while the Lakers would prevent a quick finish by UR, McGaffigan's kill up 23-17 brought up set point, and after a service error, Cook put down another kill to give UR a 25-18 win in the opening set.

Rochester again surged ahead early in set two, but the Lakers would come back from down early to level the set score at 11-all, but an Oswego State service error gave UR the lead right back. Rochester would then score three straight, with Areti Tsirikaki's kill helping the 'Jackets jump back out to a 15-11 lead.

And while the Lakers would keep things close, trailing by just two following Kaylee Troy's ace, two Moore kills made it 21-17 and forced Oswego to take a timeout, and out of the timeout, Rochester held the Lakers without a point the rest of the way.

Moore's kill and Lydia Week's service ace forced another Laker timeout down 24-17 before Weeks served up another ace to finish off the set, 25-17.

Then in set three, the 'Jackets scored four in a row on Julia Chotiner's serve to take a 7-2 lead they'd never relinquish, as the Yellowjackets added five more on Katie Westerheim's serve to go up 16-8.

The Lakers took a timeout down 18-11, but Cook and Bri Jones made it 20-11 with back-to-back kills out of the timeout, and the 'Jackets rolled to another, 25-18 set victory to finish off the sweep.

Moore led the Yellowjackets with a match-high 11 kills, adding 10 digs for a double-double, while Myla Nover-Estes tallied nine kills and seven digs. Westerheim led UR with 20 assists, while both Westerheim and Weeks tallied three aces.

Defensively, Weeks also led the 'Jackets with 12 digs, as the Yellowjackets held Oswego State to a .000 hitting percentage.

MATCH TWO: Rochester 3, St. John Fisher 0
With both the Cardinals and Yellowjackets looking to finish the RIT Invitational undefeated, Rochester scored the first two points of the set with a kill and an ace from Moore, but St. John Fisher would use a 5-0 run to take an 8-5 lead and force the Yellowjackets to spend their first timeout.

Down 10-6, the 'Jackets answered with a 5-0 run of their own, taking an 11-10 lead on another ace, this one from Westerheim, before the Cardinals and 'Jackets went back and forth for much of the rest of the set.

The two sides stood tied at 16 before UR made it 19-16 with three quick points off kills from Nover-Estes and Moore, and then out of a Fisher timeout went up 21-17 to force another Cardinal timeout with back-to-back kills again from Moore and Nover-Estes.

St. John Fisher would pull within two, but the 'Jackets scored three of the next four before finishing off the set with McGaffigan's kill, taking the opening set, 25-21.

The Yellowjackets and Cardinals traded runs again early in set two before Rochester began to pull away, up 13-8 following Moore's kill, and 16-11 after Cook scored a point off Westerheim's assist.

UR would take advantage of three Fisher errors to go up 19-12 before the Cardinals made a run to pull back within three.

The Cardinals would then make it a two-point game, 23-21, and force Rochester to use a timeout, by Nover-Estes slowed St. John Fisher's momentum and made it 24-21, while an attack error from Delayne Young gave UR the set, 25-21 and a 2-0 match lead.

After another back-and-forth start to set three, the Yellowjackets pulled ahead with a 6-0 run, turning a one-point lead into a seven-point, 12-5 lead behind a trio of kills from Moore and Caroline Hoag, with the Cardinals unable to break Westerheim's serve.

And while Fisher scored the next two points, UR added three more, kills from Cook and Hoag plus an ace from Nover-Estes, to go up eight, 15-7, and force St. John Fisher to take a timeout.

Out of the timeout, UR would keep rolling though, pushing ahead by 13 with a 5-0 run up 17-9, highlighted by a block by Cook and McGaffigan.

The Yellowjackets finished off the third set and sweep with three more in a row, holding the Cardinals to just five more points after an early 6-5 lead and finishing the match on a 19-5 run to take the set, 25-10 and the match, 3-0.

Offensively, Nover-Estes and Cook each tallied double-digit kills with 11 and 10 apiece, while Cook added 12 digs for her second career double-double. Westerheim again led UR in assists with 15 and Alexia Nelms added 12, while Moore tallied a game-high four assists, with Westerheim close behind with three.

Defensively, Cook's 12 digs led the Yellowjackets, while McDonald and Weeks notched nine and eight apiece.
