Behind Milos Bisenic's goal and assist, the University of Rochester Yellowjackets were able to attain a 2-1 victory at home against UAA rival Carnegie Mellon on Saturday afternoon at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Both teams played an evenly matched first 45 minutes of play with Rochester taking five shots and Carnegie Mellon taking three shots in the first half.
Rochester's first scoring opportunity came three minutes into the match when Bisenic sent in a cross from the corner, which was headed by Jeremiah Anandarajah to Kamal Ibrahim who one-touched a shot just right of the goal.
The 'Jackets displayed a strong defensive first half, not letting up a single shot in the final 25 minutes of play but CMU's back line was just as formidable and held Rochester off the scoresheet, leading to a 0-0 draw at intermission.
One minute into the second half Carnegie Mellon was able to get on the board after a throw into the box led to a scramble that was tapped in by Tristan Gonzalez just past the hands of the UR keeper.
A few minutes later, a Gonzalez 1-on-1 was stifled by Anandarajah, and the Tartan goal scorer was forced a drop pass to Billy Boucuvalas, who had his shot from the center of the box saved by Santino Lupica-Tondo.
Shortly after, Rochester was able to even up the score after Bisenic sent a cross into the box from the left side, which was flick headed by EliJose Araujo right past the diving goalkeeper into the right side of the net, moving the score to 1-1.
Both teams intensified their efforts with a tied match in the second half.
This intensity led to a yellow card on Carnegie Mellon which awarded the Yellowjackets a free kick in range of the goal in the 78th minute. Bisenic took this opportunity to make his mark on the game, perfectly sending a blast into the top right corner of the goal to give Rochester the lead.
The Tartans made a late push to tie up the game by taking three shots in the last seven minutes of play that were all blocked or saved.
Carnegie Mellon won the shots battle 14-11 and also held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Araujo led Rochester with four shots taken in the match. Despite the goal, Lupica-Tondo was able to accrue five saves on the day.
