Brandeis Downs NYU, 1-0, on Senior Day, Finishes Second in UAA

The Brandeis University men's soccer team concluded its most successful season since 2019 today, as the Judges defeated visiting NYU, 1-0, on Senior Day to finish in second place in the University Athletic Association.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 9-5-2, 5-2-0 UAA.
  • NYU, 6-6-3, 1-5-1 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With the win, the Judges turned in their finest season in five years, finishing one point behind Emory for second place in the UAA.
  • The Eagles scored in the 88th minute of their game with Rochester to salvage a 1-1 draw and deny Brandeis a share of the UAA title.
  • The last time Brandeis finished as high as second in the UAA or won as many as nine games in a season was in 2019, when they went 10-5-4, 3-3-1 in the league. Their five UAA wins are their most since 2017.
  • It was a back-and-forth game, with neither team able to find the back of the net in the first half. Brandeis had an 8-5 shooting advantage, though NYU put three of their five shots on frame, compared to two for the Judges.
  • The Judges appeared to have earned a penalty kick in the late stages of the first half, but the referees conferred and reversed the call.
  • The squads each had eight shots in the second half, but only the Judges were able to convert.
  • In the 63rd minute, Brandeis earned a corner kick, and junior Rainer Osselmann-Chai (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough Regional) placed it perfectly on the head of first-year midfielder Kaden Collins (Farmington, Conn./Loomis Chaffee School). Collins buried it in the middle of the net for his second goal of the season.
  • NYU managed five of their eight second-half shots after falling behind, but Brandeis senior Quintin Wrabley (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) made a pair of saves to keep the sheet clean.
  • Wrabley finished with five total saves for his fourth shutout of the season and the eighth of his career.
  • NYU finished with a 16-13 edge in shots, but shots on goal were 5-all. The Violets' Jackson McCloskey had four stops in the losing effort.

  • Before the game, Brandeis honored nine seniors appearing in their final career games. They were

    • Midfielder Toby Marwell (New York, N.Y./Hunter Science)
    • Forward Gabe Haithcock (Macon, Ga./IMG Academy)
    • Midfielder Yannick Rihs (New York, N.Y./Lycee Francais de New York)
    • Midfielder Rafa Pedro (Lexington, Mass./Lexington)
    • Back Andres Gonzalez (Caracas, Venezuela/Divine Savior Academy)
    • And forward Eli Mones (Portland, Ore./Grant).
