The New York University men's basketball team, ranked #10 in NCAA Division III, won its fifth-straight game and held on to first place in the University Athletic Association (UAA) with an 81-76 victory over the University of Rochester on Friday in Rochester, New York.

The Violets (16-3, 6-2) trailed the Yellowjackets (9-10, 3-5), 68-62, with just over five minutes left in the game before going on a 9-0 run to erase the deficit.

Then, with the score tied 76-76, Spencer Freedman hit a turnaround jumper with 1:09 to play, Cinque Stephens hit a free throw with 36 seconds left, and Freedman iced the game with two more free throws with just 10 ticks remaining as the Violets pulled away to the road victory.

NYU led 41-35 and halftime and increased its lead to a game-high 10 points, 45-35, on Zay Freeney's layup early in the second half.

Rochester reclaimed the lead with 13:04 left and eventually took that six-point lead.

Michael Savarino's layup started the crucial 9-0 run that helped put the Violets back on the road to victory.

Freedman finished with a game-high 31 points, while Freeney (15) and Savarino (11) each scored in double figures.

Emmanuel Onuama led the way with eight rebounds, while Savrino chipped in with seven and Stephens finished with six.
