Two goals over the final 11 minutes of play helped the Emory University men's soccer team to a comeback victory over the University of Lynchburg Friday afternoon in the opening game of the John P. Salamone Invitational on the campus of Oglethorpe University.
The Eagles erased a 1-0 lead as sophomore Lorenzo Avalos picked up the game-tying goal at the 78:59 mark. Sophomore Julian Hee swung a pass into the center where classmate Prescott Bayman redirected it off the endline back to the center of the box where Avalos was there to hammer it home.
Moments later junior captain Josh Grand provided a clutch strike, scoring the game-winning goal with 2:59 showing on the clock following the feed from senior Juan Figueroa. The goal was Grand's second in as many games.
The game featured limited opportunities as both sides combined for just 12 shots across the 90 minutes, including nine on frame.
After Lynchburg went ahead 1-0 in the early stages of the games, the Eagles held the Hornets to only six shots over the final 83 minutes. Junior keeper Keirnan Skelly posted four saves to earn his first win of the year between the posts.
