No. 4 WashU Earns Fourth Consecutive Shutout With 1-0 Win Over Carnegie Mellon
On the first crisp, cool, and breezy day of the fall, the No. 4 Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team did not let the weather deter them from continuing their winning ways. The Bears scored in the first half en route to a 1-0 win over Carnegie Mellon on Sunday morning.
The win improves WashU to an 11-1-0 season record, the best start since 1985 when the Bears went 21-3-0 overall and 15-1 to start the year.
It did not take long for WashU to take the lead against the Tartans on Sunday. Regaining possession near midfield, sophomore Luca Violone passed from around the 40-yard line (for football) to first-year Daniel Kochen. Kochen controlled the ball with two touches before firing a shot from about 25 yards out to the top left corner of the goal, putting WashU ahead 1-0 at 11:34.
Despite having two near misses over the next 15 minutes, the Bears and CMU went into halftime with WashU still leading 1-0.
The pace of play picked up in the second half with 11 total shots between the two teams compared to eight in the first 45 minutes. Despite more attempts by both teams, neither was able to find the back of the net, as the Bears held on for the 1-0 shutout win.
In addition to Kochen, junior Quentin Gomez, sophomore Quentin Wallace, and junior Ethan Wirtschafter each had two shots against the Tartans.
Junior Cal L'Hommedieu picked up his 11th win of the season after playing all 90 minutes and making three saves.
