No. 16 University of Rochester women's soccer upset the No. 3-ranked University of Chicago Maroons, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

Despite being outshot 16-3 and 8-1 on goal, the Yellowjackets made the most of their one shot on target, with Hannah Nagashima tallying the game-winner in the 51st minute, while URochester's defense kept Chicago out of the back of the net.

In the first half, the Maroons dominated possession and outshot the 'Jackets, 5-0, but Sydney Moore made the first two of her eight saves, a new career-high, keeping things scoreless at the break.

An early attempt by Mary Stuart Kerrigan was blocked, resulting in a corner. And four minutes later, on another Maroon corner, one of seven Chicago sent in on the afternoon, Moore deflected away Kami Braxton Grimes' attempt, resulting in a third Chicago corner.

Moore came up with another save in the 22nd minute on a right-footed shot from Kaitlyn Gomez, while UR had to defend and clear yet another Maroon corner kick just shy of the 27-minute mark of the first.

Following a diving save by Moore on Lucy Harrison-Caldwell's flick just over a minute into the second half, the Yellowjackets started to press forward, looking to beat Chicago on the counter.

And in the 51st minute, the Yellowjackets would break through. Off a quick restart, Cece Vassallo slipped a tremendous ball through the Chicago defense to Nagashima, who, one-on-one with the keeper, beat Sophia Sasaki with a shot to the left post to give Rochester a 1-0 lead.

The Maroons, now trailing 1-0, quickly turned up the pressure, forcing Moore to make four saves over the next 10 minutes.

Rochester cleared Chicago's corner in the 55th minute, but Chicago quickly won the ball back. Moore got a piece of another Braxton Grimes' attempt in the 58th minute, stopping the Maroons on a 1v1 opportunity, while Jamie Nguyen saw her attempt on the ensuing Chicago corner.

Again, though, the Maroons kept the ball in their offensive zone and put the pressure on URochester's defense, but the 'Jackets were up to the task. Moore saved Stuart Kerrigan's header at the 58-minute mark, and then made stops on shots from Gomez and Tahra Minowada a little over a minute later.

The 'Jackets finally eased the pressure and nearly made it 2-0 in the 65th minute, as Rochester played a through ball to Delia McMullen. Charging up the right seam, McMullen settled but saw her shot blocked, while Claire Baim settled the deflection and just sailed her attempt wide for a goal kick.

Chicago then again upped the pressure offensively, but again, URochester's defense stood firm. The 'Jackets pounced on loose balls and cleared them away, while Moore made a leaping save on Ella Cho's 71st-minute shot, corralling the shot high above her head.

That'd be the last shot on goal UChicago would get the rest of the way, as Rochester's defense continued to hold firm, and the 'Jackets put just enough pressure, offensively, on the Maroons with their counterattack.
Late attempts by Harrison-Caldwell and Annabel Edwards were blocked and sailed wide, while again URochester defended and cleared Chicago's 87th-minute corner before the final horn sounded, finishing off the shutout and top-five upset for the Yellowjackets.

With the win, Rochester moves to 8-2-5 (2-2-1 UAA) on the year, while the Maroons drop their second straight, falling to 11-2-2 (2-2-1 UAA) with the loss.

Moore made a career-high eight saves, playing all 90 minutes in goal to earn the victory, while Nagashima netted the game-winning score, with Vassallo picking up the assist.
