No. 7 UChicago Opens UAA Play with Win Over No. 25 NYU
The No. 7 ranked University of Chicago women's soccer team opened UAA play with a thrilling 3–2 victory over No. 25 New York University on Saturday afternoon as they celebrated their Pride game. Mary Stuard Kerrigan led the team with two goals to raise her season total to five.
UChicago got on the board early in the 19th minute when Kamiryn Braxton Grimes finished a perfect passing sequence from Indira Naylor and Lucy Harrison-Caldwell. Just over ten minutes later, the Maroons extended their lead to 2–0 as Mary Stuart Kerrigan converted a tough-earned penalty kick to put the Maroons up by two. NYU responded before the half, narrowing the margin to 2–1 in the 42nd minute of play.
The second half saw UChicago put more intense pressure on the Violets. For the second penalty of the game, Kerrigan was called up once again following a NYU yellow card. She delivered with a perfect placement to the left side of the goal, pushing the lead to 3–1. NYU made a late push and pulled a goal back in the 83rd minute when Julia Spang found the net, but the Maroons' defense held firm over the final minutes to secure the win.
UChicago outshot NYU 12–7, including a 7–5 edge in shots on goal. Sophia Sasaki recorded three saves to earn the victory. The match was extremely physical as there were 13 total fouls and two yellow cards issued to NYU.
