No. 10 WashU Sweeps Gorloks On The Road
In a midweek matchup, the No. 10 Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team traveled across town to take on Webster on Wednesday evening. The Bears made quick work of the Gorloks with a 3-0 sweep.
The win marked the 22nd in a row for WashU over Webster as the Bears own the all-time series record, 22-0.
The Gorloks might have won the first point in the first set, but the rest of the way was all WashU. The Bears went on a 7-1 run to jump ahead 7-2 for a five-point lead. Webster pulled within three on two more occasions, but not any closer. A kill by junior Naya Ohuabunwa, a service ace by first-year Isabel Campie, and a kill by first-year Nia Jones closed out the first set 25-13.
The second set was not much better for the home team as WashU used another 7-1 run to take a 15-6 lead midway through the second set. Despite several attempts by Webster to get back into the set, WashU did not let them score more than two points in a row as a kill by senior Eva Boling gave the Bears a 25-14 win in the second set and a 2-0 match advantage.
WashU began the third set like most of the others, with the lead, 7-4. However, the Gorloks kept the set close. Webster took an 11-10 lead; their first lead in a set after a team had scored more than three. The lead changed hands two more times before WashU used a 4-0 run to jump ahead 18-14. A 7-3 run by the Gorloks saw the score tied late at 21-21.
After a WashU timeout, Webster took its final lead at 22-21. Three points later the Bears had tied the match at 23-23 on a kill by Ohuabunwa. Back-to-back service aces by first-year Abby Krause sealed the 3-0 sweep, 25-23, in favor of the Bears.
As a team, the Bears led in kills (36-29), aces (8-5), assists (35-27), and digs (40-37).
Ohuabunwa had the match-high in kills with 10. Senior Sam Buckley finished with 25 assists.
