No. 17 Tartans Top Oberlin, 53-50, to Open the Season

The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team, ranked 17th in the nation by D3hoops.com, opened the season with a 53-50 victory at Oberlin College on Tuesday.

How it Happened

  • Senior Nicole Timko started off the scoring 20 seconds in with a three-pointer. The Yeowomen quickly matched this, making the score 3-3.
  • With multiple connected three-pointers, the Squirrels took the early lead, finishing up the first quarter 13-9.
  • With a six point run at the beginning of the second quarter, the  Yeowomen upped their lead to 19-9. Freshman Aleena Dinker broke the streak with a three-point jump shot.
  • Junior Allie Heyer kept the Tartans in the running with another three-pointer at seven minutes remaining in the quarter.
  • With three minutes left in the quarter, the Tartans went on a run, including a three-pointer from freshman Niyati Bangalore and layups from senior Savannah Gibbs and Timko.
  • Timko's layup put the Tartans in the lead 27-26.
  • By 5:48 remaining in the third quarter, things were tied up once again at 31-31.
  • Timko broke the tie for the Tartans with four made free throws.
  • Heyer helped the Tartans hold a lead later in the quarter with a three-pointer with 1:24 remaining.
  • With the first basket of the fourth quarter, the  Yeowomen tied things up 44-44. Heyer broke this tie with another three-pointer.
  • The Tartans stayed in control the rest of the game with Dinker hitting one of two free throws with two seconds to play to force the home team into a desperation shot to tie it.

  • The Tartans ended the game shooting 27.5% (14-51) from the field and converted 33.3% (7-21) from behind the arc.
  • Timko had team-highs of 13 points, seven rebounds, and five steals.
  • Heyer scored 11 points and Dinker scored eight.
  • Sophomore Payton Baney each had seven rebounds.
  • Gibbs had a team-high five assists.

  • The Yeowomen ended the game shooting 32.7% (18-55) from the field and converted 30.4% (7-23) from behind the arc.
  • Lily Najmulski had a team-high 15 points.
  • Angela Kumler had six steals.
