Tartans to Play for UAA Volleyball Championship Title After Posting Two Wins on Saturday

The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team will play for the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship after advancing to the finals of the championship tournament following two wins on Saturday at Brandeis University. The Tartans defeated Case Western Reserve University, 3-2, in the quarterfinals and the University of Chicago, 3-0, in the semifinals. The Tartans overall record sits at 23-8.

Inside the Box Score Against Case Western Reserve

  • The Tartans won the first set 25-22 before dropping the second and third by scores of 25-19 and 25-19. The Cardinal and Gray then won set four 25-21 to force set five where they won 15-10.
  • The Tartans hit .215 and the Spartans hit .223.
  • Senior Katherine Jackson led the team offensively, with a career-high 17 kills, followed by classmate Elizabeth Schlemmer with 13.  
  • Seniors Julianna McFarland and Bella Woodard along with junior Kate Giang each had nine kills.
  • Junior Neha Tummala tallied 27 assists.
  • Sophomore Brynn Shearn recorded a career-best six service aces
  • Sophomore Izzy Saffert tied a career-high with 20 digs to lead five Tartans with double digit digs. Tummala finished with 15, Jackson 13, Giang 12 and freshman Dani Lee had a career-best 11 digs.
  • McFarland led at the net with five block solos and one block assist.

  • The Tartans won by set scores of 25-16, 25-14, 25-19.
  • The Tartans hit .305 and the Maroons hit .062.
  • Giang led the Tartans with 10 kills, followed by McFarland with nine and Jackson eight.
  • Lee and Jackson each recorded two service aces for the Tartans.
  • Lee and Tummala led in assists for the Tartans with 18 and 17, respectively.
  • Junior Zoe Gavros led the Tartans with 19 digs, followed by Jackson with 14 and Giang with 13.
  • McFarland led the Tartans with five block assists.
