The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team traveled to Washington, Pennsylvania on Tuesday evening to play the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson College. After a game with five tie scores, the Tartans came out on top 76-70. This puts the Tartans at 4-1 overall, while the Presidents are now at 3-2.

How it Happened

  • With the Tartans trailing 13-9 six minutes into play, the Cardinal and Gray scored seven straight points over the next two minutes and took a 16-9 lead.
  • A minute later, W&J knotted the score at 17-all, but the Tartans answered with a 13-2 run over the next four minutes and led 31-19 with 6:18 remaining on the clock in the first half. During the stretch, five different Tartans scored with graduate student Sam Adusei leading the way scoring four of his six first half points.
  • Carnegie Mellon extended its lead to 35-21 off a triple by junior Isaac Higgs at the 4:31 mark before W&J cut the deficit to 43-35 at the break.
  • W&J pulled within four points at 45-41 two-and-a-half minutes into the second half, but the Tartans responded as they scored seven of the next nine points and led 52-43.
  • The Presidents then scored the next six points and made the score 52-49 with 13 minutes remaining.
  • Over the next five minutes the Tartans extended their lead to 59-51 with a triple by Higgs and two buckets by graduate student Nikola Dimitrijevic.
  • W&J didn't go away as the home team used a 10-4 run over the next two minutes and made the score 63-61 before the Presidents tied the score at 65-65 on a tip-in by Alex Acosta with 3:59 on the clock.
  • With the score tied at 67-all, a three-point basket by sophomore Evan Mirazimi followed by a layup by Higgs and another layup by Mirazimi in a span of 1:34 gave the Tartans a 74-67 advantage as the clock showed 1:31 to play to seal the victory for Carnegie Mellon.

Tartan Stats

  • The Tartans ended the game shooting 57.7% (30-52) from the floor and converted 47.4% (9-19) from behind the arc.
  • Dimitrijevic led the team with 20 points. He made 8-of-11 from the floor for 72.7%. He also had seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals.
  • Higgs finished with 17 points while senior Buckley DeJardin chipped in with 10.
  • Mirazimi recorded a double-double with 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds to lead all players on the boards. He also handed out a career-high five assists.
  • Sophomore Ian Brown sank every shot he attempted, as he was 3-of-3 from the floor all from behind the arc.

President Stats

  • The Presidents ended the game shooting 46.2% (24-52) from the floor and converted 17.4% (4-23) from behind the arc.
  • Matthew Carte led the team with a total of 16 points. He shot 6-of-12 from the floor.
  • Alex Acosta scored 14 points and also had team-highs of five rebounds and four steals while Matt Seidl had 10 points.

Notes

  • The double-double for Mirazimi was the first of his career.
  • It was the fourth time this season the Tartans shot over 50% from the floor as they are 4-0 in those contests.
