No. 17 Tartans Drive By No. 7 Cortland for 54-50 Victory
The 17th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team traveled to Marietta, Ohio, for the 39th Annual Jim Meagle Classic sponsored by BSN Sports at Marietta College for its third game of the season on Friday. The Tartans faced seventh-ranked SUNY Cortland, their second ranked opponent this season, and topped the Red Dragons, 54-50, to move to 2-1 for the season.
How it Happened
- The Tartans led for 39 minutes and 18 seconds of the game with their largest lead coming with 1:32 to play in the first quarter at 17-7. The Tartans also led by 10 with 31 seconds to play in the third quarter, 46-36.
- Both times, the Red Dragons pulled the score to one point as their only lead of the game was in the first quarter when a three-pointer by Kaeli McAnally made it 3-2.
- The Tartans spread the scoring in the first quarter with senior Nicole Timko leading with five points and sophomore Payton Baney scoring four points.
- The Tartans 10-point first quarter lead dropped to seven points at halftime, 32-25, as the Red Dragons hit 77.8% of their attempts for the frame.
- Timko's two three-pointers in the second quarter led all scorers and pushed her to 11 points at the half.
- Baney, Timko, and senior Savannah Gibbs played all 10 minutes of the third quarter with each scoring two baskets and Baney dishing out three assists.
- Cortland pulled within one point with 2:06 to play on a layup by Brooke Tillotson but the Tartans answered with two free throws by Timko and a defensive rebound that led to a pull up jumper by Bangalore to go ahead 54-49 with 1:05 to play.
- The Red Dragons missed a three-pointer with seven seconds to play and the Tartans held out the clock to finish with the 54-50 victory.
