CWRU Sweeps Wooster to End Regular Season

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team ended the regular season with a three-set sweep of the College of Wooster (25-16, 25-12, 25-18) on Saturday afternoon at Timken Gymnasium in Wooster, Ohio.

The Spartans improved to 15-13 this season, while the Fighting Scots ended 2025 with a record of 5-21.

Stats and Standouts

  • Senior middle blocker Amanda Ngo led the Spartans with 12 kills with a .400 hitting percentage and added four blocks
  • Senior outside hitter Kalli Wall added six kills, five digs, two blocks, and an assist
  • Sophomore setter Elena Esquivel had a team-high 32 assists, added 13 digs, put down five kills, and blocked four attacks
  • Sophomore defensive specialist Sophia Datto paced the squad with 14 digs, followed by junior outside hitter Emily Goodpaster, who had 13

First Set (25-16)

  • CWRU was able to take a four-point lead, 12-8, on a kill by Wall
  • A 4-2 Spartan run increased the advantage to six, 16-10, and a later kill by sophomore right-side hitter Madeline Halter put Case Western Reserve ahead 19-11 in the opening set
  • Wooster was able to cut its deficit to six, 21-15, but the visitors ended the stanza by winning four of the final five points in the stanza  

Second Set (25-12)

  • The Spartans started the second set by taking seven of the first nine points, receiving kills from Ngo, Esquivel, and sophomore outside hitter Sienna Olson during the run
  • An ace by first-year defensive specialist Thea Beran increased the team's lead to six, 10-4
  • Following a service error, CWRU won eight of the following nine points, increasing its edge to 12, 18-6 on a Wooster attacking error
  • The Fighting Scots cut their deficit to nine, 21-12, but the Spartans ended the set with four points in a row to claim the second stanza

Third Set (25-18)

  • The teams split the first eight points before the hosts used a 6-2 run to take a three-point lead, 9-6, early in the third set
  • The Spartans responded by winning the next four points, tying the score on a block by Ngo and Esquivel and taking the lead on an Esquivel kill
  • CWRU and Wooster traded the following seven points before a Wooster ace and kill gave the hosts the lead again, 15-13
  • After trading the next two points, Case Western Reserve went on an 8-0 run on the service of first-year setter Kaitlyn Harris to take a 22-16 lead, it would not relinquish
  • Ngo had three kills and contributed two blocks during the run
  • After a Wooster kill, Ngo buried two more kills to increase the lead to seven, 24-17, and Wall finished the match with her sixth kill

  • The Spartans improved to 15-8 against Wooster since 2002, including winning the last four matches and 10 of the previous 11
  • 14 members of the team played in the match
  • CWRU won seven of its last nine matches to end the regular season
  • Ngo has recorded at least 10 kills in 15 different matches this year, and she went over 100 total blocks for the second season in a row, finishing the match with 102 in 205
  • Datto reached 500 digs this season during the match, finishing the day with 501 in 2025
