Hot Shooting Leads Tartans Past Presidents, 78-67

The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team shot 49.1% from the floor on its way to a 78-67 road victory at Washington and Jefferson College on Wednesday. The Tartans are now 5-3 while the Presidents drop to 7-2.

How it Happened

  • Washington and Jefferson jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the Tartans hit their first basket, a three-pointer by senior Nicole Timko, with 5:29 to play in the quarter.
  • The Presidents would later lead 15-8 until the Tartans closed the final minute with a layup by senior Ava Arias and step back jumper by freshman Niyati Bangalore to make it a two-point deficit at the first break.
  • A 15-9 run to start the second quarter put the Tartans ahead 28-24 with 4:33 to go. The run started when junior Allie Heyer drained a three-pointer for the first basket of the frame to give the Tartans their first lead 16-15.
  • The Tartans continued to lead through the end of the quarter and held a seven-point advantage, 38-31, at the break.
  • The Tartans were 6-of-11 from long range in the half and hit 4-of-5 free throw attempts while the Presidents were 3-of-8 and 6-of-8 in each category, respectively.
  • Timko and Bangalore each had nine points while sophomore Payton Baney scoring eight and Heyer scoring seven for the quarter.
  • The Tartans also held the Presidents' leading scorer, Riley DeRubbo, to six first-half points on 1-of-7 shooting from the floor.
  • Senior Savannah Gibbs led the Tartans in the third quarter with seven of her nine points, starting the period with a layup and closing her quarter scoring with a three-pointer that put the Tartans ahead by 15 points, 54-39.
  • Bangalore hit a triple with 1:03 to go and then finished the quarter with two free throws to extend the Tartan advantage to 17 points, 61-44.
  • The Tartans shooting slowed slightly in the final frame but they were able to maintain at least an eight-point lead the remainder of the game for the 78-67 road victory.

  • Timko finished with a career-best 26 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor including 3-of-4 from long range and an additional 9-of-10 showing at the free throw line.
  • Bangalore recorded a career-best 14 points while Baney closed with 13 points.
  • Baney was the team leader in rebounds with eight while Timko had seven.
  • Four Tartans recorded two assists while freshman Aleena Dinker led with two steals.
