Mya Hartjes Scores Career-High 25 to Lead CWRU to 68-55 Win over Oberlin

The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team returned to action after a layoff of over three weeks to defeat Oberlin College 68-55 behind a career-high 25-point effort from junior guard Mya Hartjes at the Baldwin Wallace Holiday Classic in Berea, Ohio, on Monday afternoon.

The win ended a stretch of back-to-back losses for the Spartans, who improved to 6-3 overall, while the Yeowomen dropped their second-straight game to fall to 4-6.

Stats and Standouts


  • Hartjes' 25 points came behind a nine-of-15 shooting effort overall, including a career-best seven made three-pointers on 10 attempts. She also led the team with nine rebounds and added an assist, a steal, and a block with just one turnover.

  • Senior guard/ forward Emily Plachta was the only other Spartan to score in double figures on Monday, finishing with 16 points. Plachta collected five rebounds, two assists, a steal, and three blocks.

  • Junior forward Biz Watson came off the bench to score six points with six rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocks in a well-rounded effort.

  • CWRU finished the game shooting 32.8% (22-67) overall, 31.6% (12-38) from long range, and 80.0% (12-15) from behind the free throw line. Oberlin shot 34.5% (20-58) overall, 40.0% (6-15) on three-point attempts, and 81.8% (9-11) from the free throw line.

  • The Spartans finished the game with a 13-4 edge in steals, a 9-4 edge in blocks, and outscored Oberlin 21-9 off turnovers.

First Period


  • CWRU scored the first four points of the game before the Yeowomen answered with four straight to tie the score with 6:38 to play in the period.

  • The Spartans answered with a 6-0 run, capped off by a layup from Plachta, to go ahead 10-6 with 3:37 on the clock.

  • Plachta added her team-high seventh point of the period, a three with 2:20 to go in the first, to set the score at 13-8, before Oberlin took its first lead of the game behind a 7-0 run.

  • Hartjes hit a three with 36 seconds left in the period to give the Spartans a 16-15 advantage after the first frame.

Second Period


  • CWRU maintained a lead through the early part of the period, going ahead by as many as five points, before Oberlin was able to knot the score at 27 points with 3:56 left in the stanza.

  • The Spartans answered, regaining the lead on a three by Hartjes and a layup by junior guard Jordyn Call on the next two possessions. Another three from Hartjes, her fourth of the half, pushed CWRU's lead to 25-27 with 2:27 remaining in the second. Call added a three of her own with 1:46 left in the period to cap off an 11-0 run and give CWRU a 38-27 edge.

  • Hartjes added another three in the final minute to give her a game-high 17 points over the first 20 minutes and hand the Spartans a 43-29 lead heading into halftime, the team's largest lead of the half.

  • CWRU shot 47.4% (9-19) as a team during the second quarter, including 42.9% (6-14) from long range.

Third Period


  • The Spartans led by double digits throughout the third quarter, pushing their lead to over 20 points with an early 10-0 run.

  • Plachta connected on a layup with 4:43 left in the third to give CWRU a 22-point advantage, 56-34, and the Spartans closed out the period with an 18-point lead, 56-38.

Fourth Period


  • Hartjes connected on a three with 7:58 left in the game to push CWRU's lead to 21, 59-38.

  • Oberlin would not get any closer than 13 points for the remainder of the game as the Spartans were able to maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the way to complete the 68-55 victory.

Spartan Notes


  • Hartjes recorded her third 20-point effort of the season and the fifth of her career on Monday. The 25 points were the most in a game by a Spartan since Sarah Mitchell scored 27 against Carnegie Mellon on February 25, 2024.

  • Hartjes became just the third player in program history to make seven or more three-pointers in a game, joining former Spartans Isabella Mills and Mary Herendeen. Mills holds the program record with 10 made three-pointers in a game against WashU on January 20, 2023.

  • Monday's game was the Spartans' first contest in 23 days and marked the beginning of a stretch of three games over the next six days.

  • CWRU now stands at 3-0 in neutral-site games this season.

  • The Spartans improved to 33-17 all-time against Oberlin. Monday's game was the first meeting between the two teams since a 74-73 overtime win for CWRU during the 2016-17 season.

  • With seven points on Monday, junior forward Maura Schorr reached 300 points for her career.
