UChicago Opens Season with 6-0 Rout of East Texas Baptist
The University of Chicago women's soccer team kicked off the 2025 campaign in dominant fashion, cruising to a 6-0 victory over East Texas Baptist University on Friday afternoon in Santa Cruz.
The Maroons (1-0-0) controlled the pace from the opening whistle, outshooting the Tigers 20-2 and racking up 12 corner kicks in a one-sided affair. Six different UChicago players recorded points in a well-balanced offensive display.
After sustained pressure throughout the first half, the Maroons broke through in the 42nd minute when sophomore Karena Shah opened the scoring with a composed finish off a feed from Berkeley Hedgspeth. Just under two minutes later, freshman forward Kate Bruntlett doubled the lead with her first of two goals of her college career, assisted by Annabel Edwards.
UChicago kept its foot on the gas after halftime. Kamiryn Braxton Grimes netted her first collegiate goal in the 55th minute, before Bruntlett struck again just three minutes later, this time set up by Kaitlyn Gomez.
Senior Avery Gallucci added to the tally in the 66th minute with a smooth finish off a pass from Mary Stuart Kerrigan and Cate Brown capped the scoring in the 85th minute, converting another assist from Hedgspeth—her second of the match.
On the defensive end, the Maroons were impenetrable, holding ETBU without a shot in the first half and allowing just two total shots, both saved in the second half.
