Tartans Complete Opening Weekend With a Split

The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team traveled to Gettysburg College for the Battlefield Classic to open the 2025 season, competing against Messiah University and Otterbein University on Saturday. The Tartans won 3-1 against Messiah and then dropped a five-set (3-2) contest to Otterbein to leave their record at 2-1 on the young season.

Inside the Box Score Against Messiah

  • The Tartans won the first two sets 25-16 and 25-21, before dropping the third set in a close rally 25-27, then clinched the win with a 25-20 score in the fourth.
  • The Tartans hit 0.175 while the Falcons hit 0.051
  • Junior transfer Kate Giang along with seniors Elizabeth Schlemmer and Julianna McFarland led the Tartans offense with 16, 10, and 10 kills, respectively.
  • Senior Kai Herchenroether led the tartans with eight block assists at the net.
  • Junior Neha Tummala and freshman Melissa Jin led the team in assists with 20 and 16 out of the teams 44.
  • Jin and Giang each tabbed three service aces to lead the Cardinal and Gray.
  • Junior Zoe Gavros had 16 digs. Schlemmer and Giang had 13 digs each while Tummala finished with 10.

Inside the Box Score Against Otterbein

  • The Tartans won the first set 25-18, lost their second 18-25, won the third set 25-18, then lost the last two sets, 19-25 and 8-15.
  • The Tartans hit 0.128 while the Cardinals hit 0.203
  • Giang led the Tartans offense with 15 kills.
  • McFarland had a team-best two solo blocks, as Herchenroether continued her dominance at the net with four block assists.
  • Tummala handed out 28 of the team's 38 assists, while the junior also recorded a team-best four service aces.
  • Gavros led the team with 15 digs. Sophomore Izzy Saffert and Tummala followed closely behind with 13 and 11 digs, respectively.

Notes

  • Gavros has now recorded double-digit digs in all three contests this season.
  • Gavros' 18 digs against Messiah is a career-best.
  • Giang has now recorded double-digit kills in all three contests this season.
  • Herchenroether's eight block assists against Messiah is the most by a Tartan since Jane Dean recorded eight against Brandeis on September 18, 2021. Her eight block assists is also a career-high.
  • Saffert also recorded a career-high with 13 digs against Otterbein.
