Tartans Claim Wins Over No. 4 Johns Hopkins and No. 20 Ithaca

The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball competed in the second day of the Carnegie Mellon Quad sponsored by DoubleTree Downtown on Saturday, winning both matches against Ithaca, ranked 20th, and Johns Hopkins ranked fourth. The Tartans opened play Saturday morning with a 3-1 win over Ithaca and then beat Johns Hopkins 3-2 in the nightcap.

Inside the Box Score Against Ithaca

  • The Tartans claimed the first two sets, 27-25 and 25-12. The Bombers took the third set 25-22, before the Tartans rallied to win the final set 26-24.
  • The Tartans hit .219 and the Bombers hit .154.
  • Senior Julianna McFarland led the team offensively, knocking down 15 kills, following closely behind was junior Kate Giang with 14 kills and senior Bella Woodard with 13 kills.
  • Senior Katherine Jackson had four service aces. Giang also had three service aces. Freshman Logan Devereux recorded her first two service aces for the tartans.
  • Junior Neha Tummala led the Tartans with 48 assists, a best for the season. She also had one service ace. Junior Zoe Gavros led the tartans with 24 digs.
  • Jackson recorded 21 digs, and Tummala had 16 digs.
  • McFarland and Woodard led at the net. McFarland ended with four total blocks, one sole and three assists while Woodard had two solos and assists, respectively.

Inside the Box Score Against Johns Hopkins

  • The Tartans won the first and second set, 25-21 and 25-22. Hopkins took the next two 18-25 and 30-28 in the fourth. However, the Tartans pulled through at the end and dominated 15-6 win in set five.
  • The Blue Jays hit 0.147, and the Tartans hit 0.17. The Tartans hit an impressive 0.533 in the fifth set.
  • McFarland led with 14 kills, followed by Woodard with 11 and Jackson with 10.
  • Tummala had 35 assists for the Tartans, followed by freshman Melissa Jin with 19 assists.
  • Giang led the team in service aces with 4, followed by Jackson's 3 service aces.
  • Gavros was the defensive backbone of the tartans with 43 digs, nearly doubling her prior season bests. Giang followed with 27 digs.
  • McFarland had nine block assists, and one solo block. Jackson and Woodard followed behind with 5 and 4 block assists respectively.
