Juan Vera Strikes in 85th Minute to Give No. 18 Judges 1-0 Win over John Carroll

The Brandeis University men's soccer team struck for the game-winning goal in the 85^th minute as the 18^th-ranked Judges defeated visiting John Carroll University, 1-0, on Gordon Field today.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Judges controlled play for much of the game, owning 60 percent of possession and outshooting JCU, 16-8, including 10-3 in the first half.
The Blue Streaks' Owen Szucs made four saves in the first 45 minutes, while Brandeis senior Tyler Correnti (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) had one stop in the 34^th minute, a diving effort on JCU's Harley Forkins.
The Judges continued their pressure in the second stanza and it finally paid off with less than five minutes remaining. Junior Juan Vera (Caracas, Venezuela/Cypress Bay, Fla.) played give-and-go with senior Slater Loffredo (Northampton, Mass./Northwood School), allowing Vera to shake free into the 18-yard box. Vera split two Blue streak defenders into the six-yard box and beat Szucs into the left side of the goal.
It was Vera's second goal of the season and of his career, both of which have been game-winners.
The assist was the first of Loffredo's career.
The Blue Streaks were able to get one more shot off after falling behind, but it was well off target.
Szucs made six saves in the losing effort, while Correnti had just on the one stop for the Judges.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

With the win, the Judges improve to 2-0 all-time against John Carroll.
At 7-0-2, the Judges are off to their best start since 2014, when they won their first 11 matches.
Brandeis is 10-0-2 in their last 12 games dating back to last season, their longest unbeaten streak since winning their last five games of 2011 and going 11-0-1 to start 2012, a 17-game unbeaten streak.
