WashU Shuts Out Elmhurst In Home Opener, 2-0
The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team knocked off Elmhurst in its home opener on Friday evening with a 2-0 win over the Bluejays. The Bears improve to 2-1 on the season.
It was not until the 78th minute that WashU was able to break a scoreless tie when junior Colin Link took a pass from first-year Miles Newman in the box and fired a shot past a stretched-out goalie.
The Bears picked up an insurance goal just five minutes later when Link fired a shot halfway in the box that the Bluejay goalie could not keep a hand on before senior Ethan Wirtschafter stepped in and left-footed a goal.
The WashU defense was on display as they kept Elmhurst from taking their first shot until the 72nd minute. On the other side of the pitch, WashU took 18 total shots, including 11 in the second half, with eight of them on goal.
The teams were tied in corner kicks, with each taking five.
Link had the game-high five shots, while Wirtschafter had four shots, all on goal, to lead the Bears.
Junior Cal L'Hommedieu played all 90 minutes in goal to record his second win and first shutout of the season.
