The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team defeated 13th-ranked Washington University in St. Louis at home on Friday by a 64-61 score for its third straight win against the Bears. The Tartans are now 9-4 overall and 1-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Bears are 10-3 and 1-1.

How it Happened

  • WashU held a 15-13 lead at the end of the first quarter which had one lead change and four ties. Lexy Harris had 10 of the team's points while the Bears scored 12 points in the paint.
  • The Tartans took a short-lived lead in the second quarter when a three-pointer by senior Nicole Timko gave them a 22-20 advantage with seven minutes to go.
  • The Bears led at halftime, 32-27, for their largest lead of the game.
  • After the Bears scored the first points of the third quarter, the Tartans had a 13-4 run to take a 40-38 lead closing on a three-pointer by freshman Aleena Dinker.
  • Harris tied the game at 40 before senior Ava Arias drained a triple off an assist from Dinker to retake the lead for the Tartans who held the advantage by one, 47-46, at the final break.
  • There were two lead changes in the fourth quarter and despite 13 points from Harris, who finished with a career-tying 37 points, the Tartans closed the game strong for the win.
  • The Tartans forced the Bears into four turnovers on their final four possessions, including a pass into the backcourt that was stolen by Timko for a free layup to take a 62-61 lead with 10 seconds to go.
  • The Bears were called for an offensive foul on a moving screen on the next possession and freshman Niyati Bangalore buried two free throws for a three-point lead with three seconds to go.
  • The Bears had to go the length of the court and missed the desperation three at the buzzer.

  • Dinker led with a career-high 19 points, three assists, and two steals.
  • Timko and senior Savannah Gibbs each scored 11 points. Timko led with five assists and eight rebounds.
  • Sophomore Payton Baney had seven rebounds and six points.
