Nicole Timko Leads Tartans in Fourth Quarter to Defeat Host Rochester
The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team defeated the University of Rochester on Friday in Rochester for its second University Athletic Association (UAA) victory of the season. The 57-52 win moves the Tartans to 10-5 overall and 2-2 in the UAA while the Yellowjackets dropped to 8-7 and 1-3.
How it Happened
- Rochester scored the first basket of the game 30 seconds in with a jumper off an offensive rebound and by the end of the first quarter the home squad led 12-4.
- The Tartans turned the ball over eight times in the quarter and shot 10.0% from the floor.
- Carnegie Mellon turned it around in the second quarter, shooting 43.8% from the field and turned five Yellowjacket turnovers into four points to trail by four, 25-21, at the halftime break.
- The teams traded points through the first seven minutes of the third quarter before the Tartans took their first lead at 37-35 off a layup by freshman Nisha Musunuri following her own steal. The possession before by the Tartans tied the game at 35-all on sophomore Anya Peper's three-pointer.
- The game was tied twice in the final three minutes of the quarter before a free throw by Rochester gave them back the lead, 41-40, going into the final frame.
- Senior Nicole Timko's layup to start the fourth quarter took back the lead for the Tartans who later led by five just after the media timeout when Timko scored her seventh point of the quarter on a driving layup.
- The Tartans would make 7-of-10 free throws to maintain the lead the remainder of the game.
- Timko, who leads the UAA in free throw percentage, made four of the six free throws taken in the final minutes.
