Tartans Sweep WashU for Second Consecutive Season

The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team traveled to compete against 13th-ranked Washington University in St. Louis on Friday. The Tartans pulled ahead at the end of the fourth quarter for a 72-59 win to sweep the season series with the Bears for the second straight season. The victory puts the Tartans at 13-7 overall and 5-4 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Bears are 16-5 and 7-3.

How It Happened

  • Freshman Aleena Dinker scored the first points of the game with a layup twenty seconds in.
  • Sophomore Payton Baney scored the next bucket for the Tartans at 5:48 remaining in the first quarter.
  • With a jumper from senior Nicole Timko and a three-pointer from Aleena Dinker, the Tartans finished up the quarter with nine points to the Bears' 13.
  • A layup from senior Savannah Gibbs brought the game to a tie score of 17-17 with 6:34 remaining in the second quarter.
  • The Bears scored the last five points of the second quarter to lead 28-25 at the break.
  • Halfway through the third quarter, junior Allie Heyer brought the Tartans to a one-point deficit with a pull up three-pointer after the Bears led by as many as six in the frame.
  • After a Dinker jump shot with 4:13 remaining in the third quarter tied the score, Gibbs hit two free throws and a three-pointer to give the Tartans a three-point advantage, 42-39, with 2:07 to go.
  • A late three-pointer by the Bears was the last points of the quarter and the team's entered the final frame tied at 44-44.
  • A steady shooting performance by the Bears in the fourth quarter built the home team an eight-point lead at 59-51 with 5:46 to go.
  • The Tartans returned the favor and made their final eight shots from the field while the Bears went cold and turned the ball over on four straight possessions, as the Tartans turned the eight-point deficit into a 13-point win.
  • Timko started the 21-point run with a pull up jumper. Dinker then drained the first of four straight triples by the Tartans, as she and Timko alternated making the big shots.
  • Baney scored the last points of the game with a jumper at 42 seconds remaining.

  • The Tartans ended the game shooting 27-62 (43.5%) from the floor and 11-25 (44%) from behind the arc, a season-high made three-pointers. 
  • The Tartans held the lead for eight minutes of the game. The final score represents their largest lead of the game, 13 points.
  • Dinker led the team with a career-high 29 points, scoring 20 points in the second half. She shot 10-18 from the floor and 5-11 from behind the arc. She also had a team-high of five assists.
  • Timko scored 15 points and had three steals.
  • Gibbs totaled 11 points and Baney grabbed eight rebounds.
  • Freshman Nisha Musunuri tied a season-best with three steals.

  • The Bears ended the game shooting 23-50 (46%) from the floor and 5-16 (31.3%) from behind the arc.
  • The Bears held the lead for just under 26 minutes of action.
  • Lexy Harris led the Bears with 20 points, sinking 10-15 from the floor, but was held without a free throw attempt for the third time this season.
  • Catherine Goodwin scored 12 points, and Sidney Rogers scored nine.
  • Harris also finished with 12 rebounds while Goodwin had four assists.
