The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, to play Emory University on Wednesday after the game was postponed from Sunday, January 25 due to extreme weather preventing traveling. The Tartans, who just topped Emory at home on Sunday, 69-57, won their third straight game against the Eagles with a 72-66 victory. The Tartans are now 15-9 overall and sit fourth in the University Athletic Association (UAA) with a 7-6 record. The Eagles fall to 14-10 and 4-9.

How it Happened

  • The Tartans started with a 7-0 run by making their first three shots and later led 14-7 after a pair of free throws by freshman Nisha Musunuri with 3:09 to go in the first quarter.
  • Emory scored seven straight to tie the game before Musunuri hit a jumper to end the frame.
  • The Eagles took their first lead after four straight points to open the second quarter, and held it until senior Savannah Gibbs hit two free throws to put the Tartans up 22-21.
  • The Eagles answered right away to retake the lead which they held for two minutes before senior Nicole Timko hit a three-pointer off a Gibbs pass to make it 28-27 to the Tartans.
  • The Tartans maintained the lead and pushed it to eight points when junior Anya Peper hit a shot behind half court at the halftime buzzer.
  • The Tartans shot 50% from the floor in the first half and made six long range shots, which is just over their season average for a game.
  • A 7-0 run to start the third quarter, all scored by Timko, gave the Tartans their largest lead of the game, 47-32, with 5:37 to go.
  • Despite shooting 27.8% from the floor, the Eagles pulled the game to single digits, 56-47, heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The Eagles scored the first six points of the fourth and pulled the game to within two points with seven minutes to go, but the Tartans answered with a three-pointer by Musunuri and a driving layup by the freshman to go back ahead by seven points a minute later.
  • Emory would later cut the deficit to four but the Tartans converted 5-of-6 free throws to lead again by eight with 24 seconds to play.
