No. 2 UChicago Defeats No. 11 John Hopkins to Open Virginia Weekend
The second-ranked University of Chicago opened their weekend in Virginia with a big 5-2 victory over #11 Johns Hopkins.
The Maroons opened the match with wins in two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead overall in the match. The #2 doubles team of Christian Liew and Jack Wong earned a 6-3 win, and Alexander Ekstrand and Gopal Koduri added a 6-3 win at #3 doubles.
UChicago quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead with straight-set wins at #1 and #3 singles. Shrikeshav Murugesan won 6-4, 6-4 at #1 singles, and Ekstrand won 6-2, 6-4 at #3 singles against the #48 player in the nation.
Moments later, Emil Grantcharov sealed the win with a 7-6(7-2), 6-4 win at #2 singles over the #23 player in the country.
Ajer Sher rounded out the match wins for the Maroons with a three-set win at #4 singles. After winning the first set 6-3, Sher fell 3-6 in the second set to bring up a deciding third set. However, he left no doubt as Sher won six consecutive games to seal the victory and the 5-2 win for the Maroons.
With the win, the Maroons improve to 6-2 on the season.
