Solid Pitching & Timely Hitting Lift #16 Spartans to 2-1 Win over Marietta
Case Western Reserve University sophomore right-handed pitchers Eric Colgrove and Ayush Shetty combined to allow just one run on six hits to lead the 16th-ranked Spartans to a 2-1 win over Marietta College at the Spartan Southern Classic in Lexington, South Carolina, on Monday afternoon.
The Spartans improved to 6-4 with the win, while the Pioneers dropped to 1-5 with the setback.

Colgrove turned in the best start of his career, going a career-long six and two-thirds innings and allowing just one run, scattering five hits and three walks, while striking out three.

Shetty pitched the final two and a third innings, allowing just one hit and a walk with two strikeouts. He picked up the win in the game to improve to 1-0 for the campaign.

Graduate student second baseman Eli Westrick went two-for-four with a triple, a run scored, and an RBI.

First-year catcher Collin Pool had a pair of hits and scored a run in the game.

Marietta broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third, taking the lead with a run off Colgrove.

CWRU responded in the top of the fifth with a two-out rally. Poole reached with a two-out single up the middle, and junior shortstop Nate Arterburn followed with a base hit to right field, putting runners on the corners. Westrick then singled to third on a 3-2 pitch plating the game-tying run.

Colgrove left the game with two outs and two on base in the bottom of the seventh, but after walking a batter to load the bases, Shetty induced a flyout to right field to end the frame with the score still tied at a run apiece.

The Spartans grabbed their first lead of the game in the top of the eighth when Westrick tripled off the wall in right field with one out and scored a batter later on a sacrifice fly by junior designated hitter Tyler Stillson.

Shetty worked around a one-out hit batter in the eighth and left a runner stranded in scoring position in the ninth to close out the contest, with the game ending on a nice running catch by senior center fielder Jasiah Harris.

Sophomore third baseman Calvin Gelle walked in the first inning and has now reached base safely in each of the eight games he has played in for the Spartans this season.

Stillson is tied for the team lead with 12 runs batted in this season.

With his two hits on Monday, Westrick now has 189 for his career (the first 182 of which came as an undergraduate at Wooster).

The win was the Spartans' first against Marietta since a 3-1 victory during the 2023 campaign, as CWRU improved to 6-12 against the Pioneers since the 2013 campaign.
