Tartans Open Season with a Split in Florida
The Carnegie Mellon University softball team traveled to Florida for a 10-game spring break trip and opened play on Sunday against Allegheny College and St. John Fisher University. The Tartans won 5-3 against Allegheny before falling to St. John Fisher, 13-6.
Game Against Allegheny
- Junior Maya Bala scored the first run in the bottom of the second off a single from senior Kira Monji after she tripled with two outs.
- The Gators scored twice in the top of the third.
- In the bottom of the fourth, a double from Monji allowed junior Maddy Beall to score and Bala, who singled to shortstop, to advance to third. Bala then ran home when freshman Aubrey Feldman grounded out to second base.
- The Gators evened the score in the top of the fifth inning.
- The Tartans answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning with Bala and Monji again recording hits with two outs.
- Beall and junior Jasmine Chao both scored on a single up the middle from Monji, securing a 5-3 win.
- Freshman Kiera Thomas and senior Haley Pucci pitched for the Tartans with Thomas earning her first career win after 4.2 innings of relief work.
- Monji led the team with three hits and four RBIs.
- Bala also had three hits.
- Chao extended her hitting streak to six games with her pinch hit single in the fifth.
Game Against St. John Fisher
- In the top of the third, sophomore Reagan Diamond homered and Monji scored from first after reaching on a single to center field.
- Freshman Riya Sharda singled with one out, stole second with two outs, and scored on a single from freshman Sophia Doherty in the top of the fourth.
- In the bottom of the fourth, the Cardinals scored eight runs on seven hits against sophomore Gianna Adams who struck out eight batters through the first three innings. All seven hits were singles.
- In the top of the sixth, the Tartans answered with three runs when Diamond doubled with bases loaded, bringing home Monji, freshman Maddie Lee, and Feldman who all reached base via singles.
- The Cardinals countered with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead 13-6.
- Diamond had a career-best five RBIs.
- Monji had three hits for the second straight game.
