No. 2 Maroons Post Gritty Win Over No. 5 Tufts
The second-ranked University of Chicago men's tennis team gritted out a tough win over fifth-ranked Tufts University after dropping the doubles point on Wednesday evening.
Tufts grabbed early momentum by sweeping all three doubles matches, taking a 1–0 lead into singles play. But the Maroons quickly flipped the script, earning a clean sweep across the singles matches in all six courts.
At the top of the lineup, Shrikeshav Murugesan set the tone with a tough three-set victory at #1 singles, outlasting his opponent in back-and-forth tiebreaks. Emil Grantcharov followed with a straight-sets win at #2, while Alexander Ekstrand added another dominant point with a 6–4, 6–4 victory at #3 singles.
The Maroons continued to roll in the lower half of the lineup. Ajer Sher delivered a bounce-back win at #4 singles after losing the second set to win the match tiebreak. Michael Choi and Christian Liew closed the door on the Jumbos with efficient straight-set wins at #5 and #6.
With the win, UChicago improves to 9–2 on the season. They'll prepare for the Stag Hen Tournament starting on Friday, where they'll take on #11 Babson in the first match of the day. In the afternoon, they'll face either Tufts or Pomona Pitzer.
