Spartans Sweep Brandeis in Saturday Doubleheader

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team bounced back from a loss on Friday to sweep a doubleheader against Brandeis at Nobby's Ballpark on Saturday afternoon, winning the first game 3-2 in the team's final at bat and claiming a 2-1 win in the second contest of the day.

The Spartans, who received votes in the latest D3baseball.com Top-25, improved to 13-8 overall and to 2-1 in University Athletic Association play with the two wins, while the Judges fell to 8-8 with a 1-2 league mark.

Stats & Standouts


  • Five CWRU pitchers combined to allow just one earned run (three total) in 18 innings for a 0.50 ERA during the day. The Spartans struck out 18 batters, walked just three, and held Brandeis to 11 hits for a .180 opponents' batting average on Saturday.

  • Sophomore James O'Connor batted .667 on Saturday, collecting four of the team's 10 hits over the two contests. He also stole four bases on as many attempts, had a triple, and walked once.

  • Senior outfielder Thomas Downs and junior designated hitter Tyler Stillson each had two hits during the day.

Game 1 Recap: CWRU def. Brandeis 3-2


  • After being held scoreless through the first seven innings, the Spartans loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, before Stillson cleared the bases with a triple to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead.

  • Junior right-handed pitcher Zach Barnes earned the win to improve to 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA on the year, pitching the final two innings of the game and holding the Judges scoreless on just one walk and a hit batter. He left runners stranded at third base in both the eighth and ninth innings of the game.

  • Brandeis scored singles runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead over CWRU, but sophomore southpaw Charlie Griffith held the Judges scoreless over the next four innings, retiring 10-straight batters between the third and seventh innings. He struck out a career-high nine batters in the game and lowered his ERA to 3.45 in the no-decision.

  • Dimitri Skourides held the Spartans hitless until O'Connor led off the fifth with a triple to center field, but CWRU was unable to drive him in.

  • Skourides suffered the complete game loss for the Judges, falling to 2-1 on the season.

Game 2 Recap: CWRU def. Brandeis, 2-1


  • CWRU did all of its scoring in the first inning of the game. With one out in the frame, O'Connor singled, and Stillson followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position. After a pop out for the second out of the inning, first-year second baseman Jaxon Knutson singled to second base to score O'Connor, and a throwing error allowed Stillson to score the second run of the game.

  • Senior right-handed pitcher Archer Stankowski started and did not allow an earned run in 5.1 innings of work, giving up just three hits and two walks. He would eventually secure the win in the game, improving to 3-0 and lowering his ERA to 3.42.

  • Two errors in the top of the sixth put runners on the corners and chased Stankowski from the game. Sophomore southpaw Jeff Radinsky entered the game, and after allowing a run on a sacrifice fly to cut the CWRU lead to 2-1, ended the inning with a strikeout to keep the Spartans in front.

  • Radinsky would pitch 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five batters.

  • The Judges loaded the bases in the ninth against right-handed sophomore reliever Ayush Shetty, but he induced a groundout to end the contest and lock down his second save of the year.

  • O'Connor finished the game with three hits in four at-bats and stole two bases.

Spartan Notes


  • Radinsky has held the opposition scoreless in six of his seven outings this season. He lowered his season ERA to 0.61 and has struck out 24 batters in 14.2 innings this year.

  • CWRU improved to 39-28 all-time against Brandeis and has won 14 of the last 16 against the Judges. CWRU is 15-5 all-time against Brandeis at home.

  • The Spartans stand at 7-2 at Nobby's Ballpark this season and have won 14 of their last 16 games at home.

  • Downs has now hit safely in six-straight games, while Stillson has a five-game hitting streak for the Spartans.

  • This was CWRU's fifth true doubleheader of the season and the team's second sweep of a doubleheader.

  • With a win on Sunday, the Spartans can clinch their 13th-consecutive UAA series dating back to the 2023 season. CWRU improved to 82-34-1 in UAA games since the start of site play in 2017.
