Tartans Sweep Action against Wentworth and Capital

The Carnegie Mellon University softball team continued play in Florida with two games on Monday. The Tartans beat Wentworth Institute of Technology with a score of 12-0 after five innings, and won against Capital University, 11-3. This brings the Tartans to 3-1 overall.

Game Against Wentworth

  • The Tartans pounded out 15 hits, starting with seven in the first inning that lead to five runs.
  • Sophomore Reagan Diamond helped bring the first players home with a single to left center, allowing senior Kira Monji to score from second and freshman Maddie Lee to score from third.
  • Junior Maya Bala, freshman Kiera Thomas, and freshman Riya Sharda also had RBIs in the inning with Thomas and Sharda each hitting doubles.
  • The Tartans brought in four more runs in the bottom of the second inning, beginning with a run from Lee on Monji's single to right field.
  • Monji scored on Diamond's double to center field with one out and Thomas and Sharda later recorded RBI singles.
  • After sophomore Gianna Adams retired the side in the third inning, the Tartans put three more runs on the board off the bats of freshman Michelle Pacheco, junior Lindsay Murai, and freshman Madison Heimann.
  • Freshman Mari Jarmoska pitched the final two innings without giving up a hit or allowing a baserunner to secure the victory.
  • Monji had three hits for the third straight game while Diamond led with three RBIs.

Game Against Capital 

  • The Tartans trailed 3-0 after two innings before scoring 11 straight runs starting with three in the top of the third inning.
  • With two outs, Monji walked and Diamond singled up the middle. Freshman Sophia Doherty hit her first career home run with a shot to left field to tie the game.
  • The score remained tied until the top of the sixth inning when Bala doubled in sophomore Gabrielle Yamoah who pinch ran for Thomas after an infield single.
  • Later in the inning, freshman Aubrey Feldman grounded out to first base, bringing Bala home from third to give the Tartans a 5-3 advantage.
  • Capital threatened in the bottom of the sixth but Thomas got out of the inning by stranding two runners as Bala made a play at the plate from third and Thomas struck out the final batter.
  • Three hits and six runs in the top of the seventh extended the lead to 11-3 for the Tartans.
  • Bala again singled in a run, Sharda doubled to plate a runner, and Lee forced the third baseman into a throwing error that scored two runs. The final run of the game was scored by Lee when Monji singled for her second hit of the game.
  • Thomas retired the side in the seventh for her first complete game victory and second win of the season.
  • Bala had a team-high of three hits.
  • Bala and Doherty tied for a team-high of three RBIs.
