Timely Hitting Leads to Sweep for the Tartans
The Carnegie Mellon University softball team continued play in Florida with two games on Wednesday. The Tartans beat Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute, 15-12, and Saint Vincent College, 5-1, to bring their season record to 5-1.
Game Against RPI
- The Tartans pounded out 15 hits, starting with two in the first inning that led to a 2-0 lead.
- With the Tartans leading 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth, they put together five hits to score three runs and take a 6-1 lead. Freshman Riya Sharda had a sacrifice fly, sophomore Reagan Diamond had a two RBI single, and freshman Sophia Doherty had an RBI double.
- RPI answered with four run in the top of the fifth and the Tartans scored two more in their half of the inning to hold an 8-5 lead after freshman Maddie Lee had an RBI single and Sharda recorded another sacrifice fly.
- RPI took its first lead of the game with a grand slam by Sydney Speanburg and extended the lead to 10-8 with a double by Addison Shaffer.
- The Tartans immediately tied the score when a fielder's choice by Kiera Thomas led to two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
- After RPI scored twice in the top of the seventh, the Tartans used their last at bats to win the game when Doherty hit a walk off grand slam with no outs.
- Sophomore Gianna Adams and Thomas each saw time in the circle with Adams ending up with the win for a 1-1 record.
Game Against Saint Vincent College
- After a quiet first inning, the Tartans scored their first run off two hits in the second after freshman Madison Heimann hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score junior Jasmine Chao who led off with a single.
- Saint Vincent tied the game with a double in the second inning.
- The Tartans would score four unanswered runs to win 5-1 with a run coming in the fourth and fifth innings and two in the seventh.
- Chao hit a home run to left center in the fourth and senior Kira Monji recorded an RBI single in the fifth to extend her hitting streak to six games.
- The Tartans then scored twice off two hits and an error in the top of the seventh. Freshman Bella Reuss led off with a single and sophomore Gabbie Boone, who entered as a pinch runner, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lee. Sophomore Gabrielle Yamoah reached on an error that allowed Boone to score. Yamoah later scored on a single by junior Maddy Beall.
- Senior Haley Pucci retired the side in the seventh to earn the save after three innings of work with three strikeouts and one hit against.
- Sophomore Gabriella Triano earned the win after pitching four innings with four strikeouts and three hits allowed.
