Two More Wins for the Tartans, Now 9-1 for the Season
The Carnegie Mellon University softball team swept another day in Florida to close the trip with a 3-2 win against Hope College and an 8-6 victory against Carthage College on Saturday. The eight game winning streak puts the Tartans at an overall record of 9-1 and the best start in program history.
Game against Hope College
- After a quiet first inning that only saw one hit by Carnegie Mellon, junior Jasmine Chao scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second after she led off with a single and later scored on a single by freshman Kiera Thomas.
- Two Tartans were left on base in the bottom of the third before freshman Riya Sharda scored when sophomore Reagan Diamond was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Sharda reached on a bunt single, advanced to second on a single by freshman Aubrey Feldman, and moved to third when junior Maddy Beall drew a walk.
- Hope tied the game when Macy Verbeek doubled with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth inning.
- As the game turned to the seventh, sophomore Gianna Adams retired the Hope side setting the stage for another walk off situation for the Tartans who won earlier in the week with a walk off grand slam by freshman Sophia Doherty.
- Diamond led off the seventh with a single and Doherty followed with a single. Junior Jasmine Chao then stepped to the plate and doubled to right field to plate Diamond for the winning run.
- Adams earned the win in relief
Game against Carthage College
- Both teams scored two runs in the first inning with the Tartans getting RBI singles from Diamond and Doherty.
- The second inning was the same as both teams scored two runs. The Tartans took a 3-2 lead after a single by Beall. As Beall stole second on a first and third play, the catcher threw behind Feldman at third with the throw getting away allowing Feldman to score.
- Two singles by Carthage tied the game at 4-4.
- Doherty hit her third home run of the week to lead off the top of the third inning.
- Carthage took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly and a single to right field.
- The Tartans immediately took back the lead with RBIs by Doherty and Chao in the top of the fourth to lead 7-6.
- Sophomore Gabrielle Yamoah pinch hit with a runner on second and two outs in the top of the seventh and singled to center field for the RBI and an 8-6 Tartan lead.
- Adams, who entered the game in the bottom of the third inning, retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to earn her second win of the day and fifth of the season.
- Adams gave up one hit and struck out six batters in 4.1 innings of work.
