No. 8 WashU Scores Four in the Seventh Inning to Defeat Brandeis on the Road
The No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis softball team scored four runs in the seventh inning to defeat Brandeis 4-2 on the road on Friday afternoon. The Bears improve to 20-3-1 on the year with an 8-2 mark in UAA play.
The game was locked in a scoreless tie until the bottom of the sixth inning when Brandeis' Jordan Wallace hit a two-run homer for the 2-0 edge.
In the Bears' last at-bat, first-year Emmy May was hit by a pitch to lead things off and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Senior Alexa Hanish singled to center to put runners on the corners and junior Elena Locascio laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring May to make it a 2-1 game.
Junior Kennedy Grippo doubled to center, scoring first-year Allie Botkin, who came on to run for Hanish, tying the game at 2-2. Grippo advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single from first-year Julia Sullo.
Sullo stole second and went on to score on a double to left from junior Julia Nicholus to make it 4-2.
The Judges put two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but the Bears stopped any further rally to hold on to the win.
Sullo finished 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. Nicholus was 1-for-2 while Grippo went 1-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.
Junior Maria Brooks earned her 11
th win of the year, pitching a complete game with five hits, two runs and a career-high 12 strikeouts.
