CWRU Tops NYU 12-9 in Series Finale

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team wrapped up its four-game series at New York University with a 12-9 win over the Violets at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park in Staten Island, New York, on Sunday afternoon.

The Spartans stand at 17-17 with a 6-10 University Athletic Association record with the series split, while the Violets dropped to 11-16 with a 5-11 conference record.

Stats & Standouts


  • The Spartans outhit the Violets 13-9 in the game.

  • Senior outfielder Matt Trout went three-for-four with a run, four RBIs, a stolen base, and his second home run of the season.

  • Junior shortstop Nate Arterburn added a three-for-five showing at the plate with four runs, a walk, two stolen bases, and a double.

  • Junior outfielder Tyler Stillson collected three hits in five at-bats with two runs, an RBI, a walk, and a double.

  • Sophomore Eric Colgrove started and earned the win to improve to 1-3, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks.

  • Sophomore Jeff Radinsky earned his second save of the season, striking out four in the final inning and a third of the game.

  • NYU starter Aidan Pawlak suffered the loss for the Violets, falling to 0-4.

Highlights & Scoring Recap


  • Back-to-back doubles from Arterburn and Stillson produced the first run of the game for the Spartans, and three straight walks, including a bases-loaded free pass to senior catcher Sean Donahue, made it 2-0. Trout singled to drive in two runs and increase the Spartans' lead to four runs, and a run-scoring groundout by first-year outfielder Cole White put CWRU ahead 5-0 after half an inning.

  • The Violets responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to trim the CWRU advantage to three runs.

  • CWRU opened the second inning with three straight singles, including a run-scoring hit from first-year third baseman James O'Connor. Graduate student designated hitter Eli Westrick followed with an RBI groundout to give CWRU a 7-2 lead, and a two-out, two-run home run from Trout made it 9-2 by the end of the frame.

  • CWRU added a run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Donahue.

  • NYU scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to get back within six runs, 10-4.

  • A two-out error in the top of the seventh allowed Arterburn to score and make it a seven-run game.

  • The Violets scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it an 11-7 contest, but a squeeze bunt by first-year Carson Matula scored Arterburn from third and put CWRU ahead by five runs. 

  • NYU scored two more runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Radinsky ended the game on a strikeout to pick up the save.

Spartan Notes


  • Trout finished the week batting .467 (7-15) with a double, two triples, a home run, three runs scored, five RBIs, and two stolen bases.

  • Stillson has reached base in each of his last 18 games, the longest active streak by a Spartan player and the second-longest on the team this season.

  • The Spartans stand at 86-43-1 in UAA games since the start of site play in 2017.

  • CWRU is 25-8-1 all-time against NYU, and 16-4 all-time in games between the two teams played in New York.
