Tartans Sweep NYU to Take Series and Earn 20th Win

The Carnegie Mellon University softball team swept the series with New York University with a pair of victories on Saturday as the program celebrated the seniors. A pair of five-inning wins by 13-4 and 17-0 scores pushed the Tartans' record to 20-12 overall and 6-6 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Violets fell to 6-26 and 0-12.

Inside the Results of Game 1

  • The Tartans scored 13 runs on seven hits with 11 runs coming after trailing 3-2.
  • The first two runs for the Tartans came in the bottom of the first when sophomore Reagan Diamond doubled down the right field line to push sophomore Maddy Beall and freshman Riya Sharda across the plate.
  • NYU took the lead in the top of the second by scoring three runs off freshman Mari Jarmoszka.
  • The Tartans answered in the bottom of the third with three runs off one hit. Freshman Sophia Doherty doubled to left center to score Beall and senior Kira Monji. Freshman Michelle Pacheco later walked with the bases loaded to make it 5-3.
  • An eight-run fourth inning for the Tartans made it 13-3.
  • The Tartans scored eight more runs in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Doherty had two RBIs with a single up the middle, junior Lindsey Murai had a sacrifice fly, freshman Madison Heimann knocked in two runs in a pinch hit appearance, Sharda beat out a throw for an infield single, and Doherty walked a run in to finish the inning.
  • NYU scored one final run in the top of the fifth inning before freshman Kiera Thomas got out of the inning with two runners on to earn her seventh win of the season.

Inside the Results of Game 2

  • The Tartans knocked around 15 hits to score 17 runs while Thomas and senior Haley Pucci combined for the shutout.
  • Eleven runs were scored in the bottom of the first inning with seven different players recording RBIs.
  • Beall had two hits in the inning with two runs scored and an RBI. Sharda also had two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs while Diamond had an RBI groundout and an RBI walk.
  • The Tartans then scored four more runs in the bottom of the second with the first being scored by junior Maya Bala after freshman Bella Reuss hit a double to left center.
  • Beall singled in Reuss, Sharda tripled to score Beall and Monji tripled to score Sharda.
  • The Tartans added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when Sharda scored on a fielder's choice by Diamond and Bala doubled to plate Pucci who collected her first career hit with a single to left field earlier in the inning.
  • Pucci finished the game off by sandwiching a ground-rule double to Sarah Huang with three strikeouts to move to 3-3 for the season.
