CWRU Splits Saturday Doubleheader To Finish Series with Emory
The Case Western Reserve University baseball team bounced back from a 6-5 loss to Emory University in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to win the second contest 6-4 at Chappell Park in Atlanta.
CWRU stands at 14-12 with a 3-5 University Athletic Association record, while Emory moved to 17-10 with a 6-2 conference mark.

The Spartans scored four runs in the top of the ninth to come back from a 5-1 deficit to tie the contest, but Emory scored in the bottom of the ninth for the walk-off win.

Senior Archer Stankowski started and held Emory scoreless through the first five innings of the game.

CWRU broke through for a run in the top of the fifth when senior outfielder Jasiah Harris led the inning off with a walk and scored a batter later on an RBI double by O'Connor.

Emory scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead and chase Stankowski from the game. He finished with two runs allowed on four hits and four walks with five strikeouts in a no-decision.

The Eagles added three runs in the bottom of the seventh to go ahead 5-1.

The Spartans trailed by four until the top of the ninth. CWRU loaded the bases with three-straight hit batters with one out, and an O'Connor sacrifice fly made it a 5-2 game. Down to their final out, junior shortstop Nate Arterburn singled to re-load the bases, and junior outfielder Tyler Stillson walked to bring across another run. Greer followed with a single through the left side of the infield, scoring Stillson and Arterburn and knotting the score at 5-5.

The Spartans would be unable to take the lead in the top of the ninth, and the first three Emory hitters reached in the bottom of the inning before a single by Jonathan Lang won the game for the Eagles.

Sophomore Ayush Shetty suffered the loss in relief, allowing four runs in two and a third innings of work to fall to 2-1 on the year, while Emory's Paul Fine secured the win to improve to 1-1.

O'Connor had two of the Spartans' eight hits in the game, driving in a pair of runs. Arterburn and Stillson each had two hits as well for CWRU in the game.

Greer plated O'Connor with a two-out double in the first inning, and senior outfielder Matt Trout drove in first-year second baseman Jaxon Knutson in the second to put CWRU ahead 2-0.

Emory scored single runs in the third and fifth innings off sophomore starter Eric Colgrove to even the score at 2-2. Colgrove threw five innings in the game, allowing two unearned runs on three hits and five walks with four strikeouts in the no-decision.

The Eagles added a run off junior reliever Zach Barnes in the bottom of the sixth, but the Spartans avoided further damage in the frame after Trout threw out an Emory runner at the plate, who was trying to score on a fly out to right field.

CWRU regained the lead with two runs in the top of the eighth. Arterburn reached on an error to start the inning and stole second. After a walk to Stillson, Greer sacrificed both runners into scoring position, and a wild pitch allowed Arterburn to score from third and tie the game. First-year catcher Collin Pool added a base hit to score Stillson and give CWRU a 4-3 lead.

The Spartans added on two more runs in the ninth when Trout scored on a wild pitch, and Harris crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by O'Connor.

Emory scored a run in the bottom of the ninth and had the game-tying runs in scoring position with two outs, but Barnes induced a groundout to end the game and secure the win.

Barnes pitched the final four innings, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts, and picked up the victory to improve to 2-1.

Emory's William King III suffered the loss in relief, dropping to 0-2.

CWRU finished the game with six hits, including a pair from Trout, who also stole a base.
