Tartans Split Action with UChicago in Final Games of Series

The Carnegie Mellon University softball team finished the three-game series at the University of Chicago after two games were suspended due to darkness with a 5-4 loss on Saturday and a 14-5 win on Sunday. The Tartans are now 14-10 and 2-4 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Maroons are 9-12 and 2-4.

Inside Game 1

  • The Tartans opened the game with two hits and two runs in the first inning when freshman Madison Heimann hit her first career home run with a runner on first.
  • Chicago then scored three runs in the bottom of the first and added a run in the bottom of the second for a 4-2 lead.
  • Senior Kira Monji ran her hit streak to eight games with a two-run double in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 4-4.
  • A double by UChicago's Audrey Hui scored the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • The game was suspended due to darkness in the top of the sixth inning on Friday and when action resumed on Saturday, the Tartans had the tying run on base when junior Maddy Beallsingled with one out. The Maroons were able to get out of the inning with two ground balls.
  • UChicago retired the side in order in the seventh to take the win.

Inside Game 2

  • The Tartans left three runners on base in the top of the first inning while the Maroons took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly.
  • Freshman Kiera Thomas entered to pitch with three runners on base and one out in the first and retired the next two batters to leave it as a 1-0 deficit.
  • Three straight hits by the Tartans put a run across the plate, as junior Lindsey Murai singled to right field to score sophomore Reagan Diamond.
  • Heimann came around to score on a throwing error by the catcher when Murai stole second and Murai later scored on a single to center field by freshman Audrey Feldmann.
  • The Maroons answered with three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 lead.
  • The Tartans put four runs on the board in the top of the sixth, starting with a bases loaded walk drawn by Heimann. Murai and freshman Maddie Lee followed with RBI singles for a 6-4 lead.
  • Feldman then hit a two-run single to left field with two outs for an 8-4 advantage.
  • UChicago added a run in the bottom of the sixth.
  • After the game was suspended due to darkness, play resumed on Sunday in the top of the seventh inning and the Tartans added six runs to lead 14-5.
  • UChicago changed its pitcher and Monji led off with a walk. Beall homered to right center for two runs. Junior Maya Bala doubled in two runs and Feldman followed with an RBI single. After another pitching change, Bala scored on an error during a first-and-third play.
  • Thomas closed out the game with two fly outs and a strikeout to win her fifth win of the season.
