Annabel Edwards Nets Winner to Lead No. 3 UChicago Past No. 6 Pomona-Pitzer
The third-ranked University of Chicago women's soccer team picked up a huge road win in a top-10 Friday night showdown, earning a 1-0 victory over #6 Pomona-Pitzer.
With the sun blaring down in Southern California, the Maroons and the Sagehens faced off in the first top-10 showdown of the 2026 women's soccer season. The Sagehens jumped out of the gate with two shots in the first five minutes, including a great chance in the 5th minute, but Amanda Kayari was up to the task for her first save of the game.
The UChicago offense had two chances of their own in the ensuing ten minutes of action as both Ella Cho and Jamie Nguyen recorded shots from distance, but the Pomona-Pitzer keeper kept the game scoreless. In the 25th minute, UChicago had two more chances just 44 seconds apart with Cho and Kaitlyn Gomez ripping shots at goal, but the Pomona-Pitzer keeper continued to excel to bring the teams into the locker room with a 0-0 score.
In the second half, the Maroons recorded the first two chances, including a great look from inside the 18 by Indira Naylor, but it would be Pomona-Pitzer coming up with the best chance thus far. In the 58th minute, Peterson Rajalingam ripped a shot from outside the box off the crossbar, rattling the frame, but the game would remain scoreless.
Just over seven minutes later, the Maroons would draw first blood as Annabel Edwards whipped in a corner kick that would be punched away by the Pomona-Pitzer keeper. Then, following a cross from Gomez, the ball fell back to the foot of Edwards, who ripped a strike through traffic to find the back of the net to put the Maroons in front 1-0. With the goal, Edwards has now scored in three consecutive games and tied the team lead with three goals in 2026.
Following the goal for the Maroons, the UChicago defense would buckle down and continue to make things incredibly difficult. Despite chasing the lead, the Sagehens would only register one shot in the final 25 minutes of action as UChicago earned the 1-0 victory. Kayari was excellent in goal for the Maroons with four saves en route to her first career clean sheet.
Hadley Hagwell also played all 90 minutes to steady the backline and extend their shutout streak to 200 minutes without conceding a goal.
With the win, the Maroons improve to 4-0 overall this season.
