No. 8 UChicago Scores Five in Road Win Over Carthage
The eighth-ranked University of Chicago men's soccer team earned a 5-1 win over Carthage on Wednesday night for their fourth consecutive victory.
The Maroons had their foot on the gas pedal from the second the game kicked off, and Edward Wu opened the scoring for the Maroons in the 15th minute as George Marin launched a long throw-in that was flicked onto the back post by Wu, bounding past the keeper into the back corner.
Just five minutes later, UChicago doubled its lead as Sean Cooke played a beautiful ball over the top, and Timothy Ratokhin beat the keeper to it before being taken down in the box. Evan Kanellos stepped up to the spot and buried the seventh penalty kick of his career, breaking the school record for most penalty kick goals in a career.
In the 33rd minute, the Maroons added an insurance goal when Preston Samtani beat his defender to the end line, lofted a cross to the far post to find the head of Jadyn Hsieh-Bailey. Hsieh-Bailey redirected the cross back into the six, finding the foot of Samuel Jimenez, who scored his third goal of the season.
In the second half, UChicago added a fourth goal in the 52nd minute when Timothy Ratokhin ripped a strike from outside the 18 to beat the keeper in the top corner, putting the Maroons in front 4-0.
The Maroons went down a man with a red card in the 56th minute, but they did not take their foot off the gas as they proceeded to record five of the next six shots in the game. Wu bagged his brace with the final goal of the game in the 67th minute after slicing through the defense to finish through traffic. The Firebirds would add a goal in the 82nd minute, but UChicago held on for the 5-1 victory.
Overall in the game, the Maroons outshot the Firebirds 22-10 with 10 shots on goal to Carthage's four. Ali Alamery made one save in goal, and Josh Nimeroff recorded two goals in 29 minutes off the bench.
With the win, the Maroons improve to 5-1 overall on the season.
